Proposed Visitors Center, 966 Falmouth Road, presentation by The Friends of Mashpee
National Wildlife Refuge.

Glenn Davis, president of the Friends of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge, went through the
history of the organization – the center was established 30 years ago, ironically, with a Visitor
Center in mind. After reviewing several sites, the group parked at 966 Falmouth Road, and
someone suggested that site for the Visitor Center location. (“It really fit the bill.”) The site has
an access road, parking, and utility access. The Mashpee Wildlife National Wildlife Refuge is a
partnership that includes the Town of Mashpee and Conservation Commission. Tonight, they
are asking for a vote of support from the Commission, comments, and guidance. Mr. Colombo
asked what the next step was – financing and building types. The Town has owned the property
since 1997 and is shown as Conservation undeclared open space. Mr. Davis met with the Town
Manager who recommended a Cape style and character building. Mr. Kent noted the proximity
of two massive areas that are in the Wildlife Refuge area and across is the Quashnet River.
This would also allow a Town Kiosk with pamphlets and information. Mr. Kent also noted the
native plants that could serve as an example of what could be done to a property. Mr. Colombo
noted that there are a lot of members of committees who have a great deal of knowledge of
Cape architecture. Mr. Glenn stated the desire to speak to abutter-developers about placement
of access paths. Mr. McManus noted the location is before Redbrook Road – ¼ mile from the
Town Line. In response to Ms. Copeland this would not connect the Mr. Atkinson’s proposal
discussed in the Public Comment section.

Ms. Godfrey made a motion to endorse the proposed Visitor Center, which was seconded by
Ms. Copeland.

Roll Call Vote:

Steven Cook (Yes)
Erin Copeland (Yes)
Sandra Godfrey (Yes)
Paul Colombo (Yes)

4 – 0 (unanimous)

\[The next step is the Selectboard\]

DISCUSSION

Weeden-Landry Petition Articles

\[Ms. Landry was unavailable and unresponsive to outreach from the Conservation staff.
Conservation staff reached out to Mr. Weedon who conveyed a message to Ms. Landry,
but there has been no response yet.\]

Buffer Zone Increase to 150’ Article Approval Enactment

th
The 25 marks the beginning of the process to change the buffer zone to 150’.
