Mr. Lyons was gracious in offering a ride to the Commissioner that is not comfortable driving after dark.
A motion was made by Mr. Towle to table this item until all Commissions are available to discuss.
Motion seconded by Co-Chair Harris.
Motion pass by unanimous consent.

NEW BUSINESS
1. Website Revision Review.
Co-Chair Harris gave a brief updated stating that they are tweaking the site a bit more and that all of the
archive information now has a summary that states when the documents were written and by whom.

2. Construction Update-GHD.
GHD was not in attendance this week.

3. Presentation by Kim Comart on the Falmouth Provisional Study on Urine Diversion.
Mr. Comart gave the Commission a presentation regarding urine diversion as a means of addressing water
quality issues affecting the area’s fresh water ponds.
He explained that nutrient overload that is causing the degradation of the ponds is coming primarily from
septic systems. He stated that 75% of nutrients are coming from septic systems, 10% of the problem is
fertilizer, 10% is road runoff and about 5% is waterfowl and house pets.
Over the past few years the Coalition has been pursuing the option of urine diversion. The Falmouth Water
Quality Management Committee reached out to The Mass Alternative Septic Test Center and inquired about
putting together a pilot project to test the efficacy and the potential impact of urine diversion in reducing
nutrient overload. The Center responded with a proposal to do a 3-year study of 50 households.
It is believed that the use of UD appliances has the potential to dramatically reduce the amount of nitrogen
going into the waters at a fraction of the cost of other technologies.
He stated that they are very interested in the idea of Mashpee, Bourne and Sandwich joining them in the pilot
project and would like to see it become an Upper Cape Regional project as this would increase the likelihood
of securing the opportunity to acquire funding for the project.

Mr. Lyons asked how the collected urine will be disposed of. Mr. Comart replied that through the pilot project
the Center will pick up the urine and bring it to the test center and any urine that is not used by them will then
go to the Falmouth Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Co-Chair Harris asked if there were any bylaw changes for the process and Mr. Comart said no and that the
Board of Health says it’s fine for people to do what they are doing as well as installing tanks in basements and
underground and then be hooked up to urine diversion appliances.

Mr. Comart stated that if anyone is interested in learning more about the pilot project to send a note to the
Falmouth Pond Coalition at falmouthpondcoalition@gmail.org or call him directly at 617-458-6442.

Mr. Comart went on to inform the Commission that there are a large number of farmers in Vermont that are
using urine as fertilizer and are paying .40/gal. to purchase it.

Susan Dangel informed the Commission of tours at the Green Center in Falmouth which has been doing UD
thst
and composting toileting. Tours are on Saturday, October 14 and Saturday, October 21. If anyone is
interested in attending a tour contact Susan at 781-248-6094.

2
