T L_ . Al s t" pe f, orfc., ctf`t tI is f.,
s .. f7
n
MASIVEE HISTORICAL C OMISSION
Minutes of Meeting — august 17, 2023
ash ee Historical Commission Meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:05 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, Rosemary Love, Nancy
Soderberg, and Joan Tavares-Avant telephoned in. Brian Hyde was not present. n
addition, five guests were present: Evan Lehrer, Town Planner, Ashley Fisher, Director
of Natural Resources, Lenny Pock nett, Matt Haney, and Alex Mergele from The
Enterprise.
Ashley Fisher came to talk to us about the Mashpee Harbor Management Plan. She is
Working on a State Comprehensive Plan on the Mashpee waterways. She is interested
in identifying ancient public access to our waterways, many of which have gone away,
in the hopes that through research they can be re-established. Evan Lehrer mentioned
the 1998 Town Comprehensive Plan which identified eight water access paints which
have gone away, and they are hoping to re-establish them. Rosemary has extensive
knowledge of many old property deeds and maps, and she volunteered to share her
research. Rosemary mentioned too, that as we known, erosion has over time has
changed the shoreline. Rosemary also mentioned that Land Courted records have no
re-scripted rights, referring to old land uses which are no longer recognized.
Ava said that Rosemary would be an invaluable resource to help Ashley and Evan. Ava
requested that they send us a memo stating the exact action items that they need help
with, and they agreed to work on that to present it to us.
Richard asked Rosemary about the Historical Commission voted in 1993 on the Hicks
family gravesites, and a marked 10-foot righit-of-way which was supposed to be taken
care of by the Town but has not. been. Richard is wondering if we should be doing
something about that cemetery, and the members agreed to him looking into it.
Rosemary mentioned that there actually two Hicks families.
We approved the Minutes of our March 16th meeting with the correction, "Rosemary
telephoned in but was not able to connect to the meeting.,,
Richard and Ava had gone to a Tales of Cape Cod meeting where they heard a
presentation on William Apess by Professor Drew Lopenizinae They invited him to tour
the One-room Schoolhouse, formerly a chapel where Apess had preached to the
ash ee Wampanoags, and he visited on Wednesday, August 16th.
