' wri
,.,
, we „ , ' , . s
f" :. , .d f1`1,, .
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Telephone - (505) 539-1 4.38
MASHPEE HISTORICAL COMISSION
Minutes of Meeting — September 14, 2023
Mashpee Historical Commission Meeting was called to order by Ava Costello at
4:09 pm.
Commissioners Present: Ava Costello, Richard DeSorgher, and Nancy Soderberg, and
Joan Tavares-Avant telephoned in. Rosemary Burns Love and Brian Hyde were not
present. In addition Alex Mergele from The Enterprise was present.
The Minutes of our meetings on July 6t" and August 17t"were unanimously approved.
Richard reported that he has corresponded with Sara Korjef of Massachusetts Historical
Commission trying to find out about our application to put the Mashpee One-Room
Schoolhouse on the National Register of Historic Places in its present location. This
has been in progress for two years.
Richard has contacted the President of the Mashpee Garden Club to see if they would
be interested in helping us with providing plants, possibly daffodils in spring and mums
in the fall. Also, he is looking into placing two large urns at either end of the monument,
and perhaps the Garden Club would take care of the planting to add some color. He
asked for the Commission approval, and they were in agreement.
Richard spoke on the placement of the new Quashnet River signs. The location will be
determined by the Conservation Commission and Catherine, the DPW Director after the
reconstruction project of Route 151 is finished.
Richard is talking with the Veterans group at Southport. They have a large group of
veterans and they are quite active; Jack Gardner is from the VFW, Larry Cron and
Charlie Aftosmis, head of the group from Southport. Richard is interested in getting
pictorial banners with photos of veterans posted on the light poles located in the
Veterans Garden/Community Park area. The pictures displayed could be any veteran
from Mashpee, different from those veterans names engraved on the Monument, who
had to be registered from Mashpee. Richard is hoping to have some of these banners
on display by Veterans Day of 2024.
Richard mentioned that he had seen a poster at the Mashpee Post Office with several
photos of Mashpee Veterans on view. Ava suggested that we should work on the list of
Post Masters at the Mashpee Post Office.
