a
- Poppy Approach Dredge: Bob Tomaino reported that the inability to get the dredge work
done this past winter was now a well communicated situation (Public meeting, multiple
emails to known constituencies etc). However, his office has continued to work to try to get
the dredge work done this July. He has fled amendments with the Army Corps, contacted
Wildlife & Heritage and Fish &Wildlife regarding protected species. All needed does to
proceed with this work have been filed. Bob will continue to update all as he receives status
reports. He noted that his office cannot commit to July but they are doing everything to work
to that date.
- Water Quality Update: Ashley Fisher reported that training for all volunteers was conducted
this morning (June 14th). All dates for sampling have been chosen. She also reported that
the much needed new meters were purchased by the Town and the Tribe and will be used
this season. She also said that the presentation of last year's results will be presented to the
Select Board this July. Ashley also noted that we have had shellfish closing in Jehu Pond
due to bacteria levels. Additionally an Active Advisory for Cynobacteria has been issued for
Mashpee/Wakeby ponds and her office is following up on concerns relative to John's Pond.
- Harbor Managment Plan: Ashley reported that the Committee is now working on pop up
public sessions over the summer to connect with the public and better understand
concerns. She also reported that plans are underway for our 2nd Public Meeting to be held
at the New Seabury Country Club on July 13th. Focus Groups are also being planned for the
late summer to early fall. She is also communicating with Chapter 91 to see what they can
contribute. We are in the early stages of a 2 year project to get State approval for our plan.
- Aquaculture Licenses Moratorium:The question was raised as to whether we should have a
moratorium until the Harbor Managment Plan is completed. A discussion of the pros and
cons commenced. It was noted that such a moratorium would not effect commercial digging
it only effects the granting of Town Plots of land as a grant. Gregg Fraser explained the
process that Falmouth goes through whereby the Town applies for the grants and then
awards on a contractual basis to commercial entities. Ashley responded that that was a
process she would like to look into. There was an overall consensus that a moratorium
makes sense but we should meet with the Shellfish Commission to seek their input. Steve
Mone will invite member of the Shellfish Commission to our next meeting.
- New Aquaculture Grant Application: John Quinterio addressed the Commission regarding his
application for a 1.98 acre grant for the Upper Great River. John began by introducing
himself and providing his background and experience in Aquaculture, which includes over 20
years with Cape Cod Oyster. He wants to build a commercially viable business that also
contributes to water quality. John's proposal has the support of the Shellfish Constable and
the Harbormaster. John reviewed his proposal and responded to questions. Following
discussion Gregg Fraser made a motion to support the application. The motion was
seconded by Steve Mone and a unanimously approved by all present.
