The Library did not lose
power as a result of the storm and remained open for all scheduled hours that week. Virtually all
of the CLAMS libraries were forced to close due to the widespread cable and power outages.
The Library's primary cable/Internet provider (Comcast) did experience an outage, but we were
able to offer Internet access by assembling a network of Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the building,
which ran on the still functional, T-Mobile network. The building was filled to capacity during
the three day outage and every available space was converted to additional workspace for
residents needing a warm place to rest, recharge devices, or work remotely. The overwhelming
response to the Library as a community resource during the storm and its aftermath should
strengthen our capital budget request to have a generator installed at the Library. A generator
would allow the Library to provide services even in the event that the building is impacted by a
future power outage.
