soil are a large variable, and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)has mandated
100 feet. She adds that a down-gradient well will need to be installed at the site, as there will be
an injection permit required with quarterly testing for the first 12 months.
AGENT COMMENTS
Mr. McManus inquires whether a shelf-life determination has been made, as well as the
DEP approval process. Ms. Thomas highlights this as an ongoing research project, but the town
of Orleans has had a system in place for approximately 8-9 years. Additional discussion ensues
regarding a bench study completed for the town of Orleans and the process for requests
submitted to the DEP.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
Jared Meader, the Wastewater Superintendent for the town of Mashpee, introduces
himself and explains his reasoning for requesting a presentation from Jessica Thomas regarding
the Permeable Reactive Barrier. Mr. Meader expresses his concerns for the community and his
intentions for improvement.
ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION
Ms. Thomas adds that the project completed on the Vineyard was located on Tribal
Land. She notes the Tribe's assistance and support. She is asked whether this is going to be a
neighborhood project or per residence. Currently, it will be per residence unless discussed
further.
It is inquired whether groundwater data has been obtained to determine the location of the
high nitrogen blooms. Mr. Meader ensures that all the data completed by the CWMP has been
collected, and both the town of Barnstable and Sandwich will be releasing their data as well.
DISCUSSION
• MASHPEE WATER QUALITY: Mr. Colombo initiates the discussion, referencing the
Monday, April 29, 2024, Environmental Oversight Committee meeting. He highlights a
key point: the high levels of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) within Johns
and Ashumet Ponds. Additionally, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
conducted a recent sampling of the ponds, and the results are expected prior to Memorial
Day. Mr. Colombo explains their concern is public ingestion directly from the water
source or indirectly through the consumption of fish from a contaminated pond.
However, currently, there are no health and safety standards regarding PFAS, so
additional discussion will ensue pertaining to this matter.
* The following Hyperlink connects to the EPA PFAS page for additional
information purposes only. ttPs:: >IL.f, .1.p,ovfp s/peas-ex lamed
• TIMES/LENGTH OF CONSERVATION COMMISSION MEETINGS: Ms. Clapprood
introduces her primary concern pertaining to the large number of issues brought forward
to the Commission.
