Mashpee Inclusion and Diversity Committee
Meeting Minutes
June 18, 2024 5:00 p.m.
Mashpee Town Hall
APPROVED: 09/17/2024
Members Present: J. Marie Stevenson, Aimen Igbal, Ayesha Shafi, Rolf Brandt, Richard
Klein, Dan Kupferman.
Visitors: Lauren Surbey (Mashpee Enterprise), Town Manager Rodney Collins
1 . Chrissy Macdonald is on vacation. Dan Kupferman is taking minutes.
2. We do not have a quorum —only4 voting members are present.
3. Public Comment: Town Manager Rodney Collins. Mr. Collins spoke about an
anonymous email sent to the Treasurer's Office. He described the email as filled
with hateful, racist, appalling comments. He read from the email, supposedly sent
by a Mashpee resident, complaining about Black "thuggery" at Mashpee Middle
High School. The sender threatened to stop paying taxes unless Black students
were removed from Mashpee Middle High School. Mashpee Police are investigating.
All present expressed disappointment and condemnation. Mr. Collins added that he
had two choices: Ignore it or bring it to us. He felt he had to make us aware of it. All
members agreed.
Chairwoman Stevenson asked Mr. Collins if anything could be done aboutthe"F---
Biden"sign on Route 130. Mr. Collins stated that the Town can't enforce language on
private property but that they are looking at signage guidelines such as size and
setbacks.
4. Meeting Minutes: There is a backlog of minutes needing approval due to lack of
quorums at meetings. A discussion about the time and date of meetings ensued.
Richard Klein will look into any rules regarding attendance of Town Committee
meetings.
5. Member Updates:
a. Enterprise Column (Dan Kupferman). The June column was published on
June 14t" and was about Race Amity Day and amity in general, as well as a
brief history of Pride Month and Juneteenth.
