<br />NEW BUSINESS: <br /> <br />1. Shellfishing in Great River/Callie’s Beach Areas: Discussion of Commercial vs. Recreational <br />use. <br />Jaime Pacheco stated that the recreational area in Great River is difficult to access and Callie’s Beach is <br />much more accessible. He suggested opening up the Great River area to Commercial Fishermen and <br />having Callie’s Beach a recreational shellfishing area. Chris Avis agreed with the proposal. <br />Chair Thomas suggested that a visual interpretation be created and brought to the next meeting and, at <br />that time, the Commission will take a vote on it and then it can be forwarded it to the Select Board. <br /> <br />2. Shellfish Constable’s Report. <br />Chris Avis gave a report covering the months of May and June. He reported that the month of May <br />mainly consisted of maintenance on the gear and getting everything up and running. He stated that they <br />pressure washed docks and gear, replaced pumps and screening and made sure everything was in working <br />order. <br /> <br />Chris reported that Little River and Upper Great River are currently closed for shell fishing. <br /> <br />The Town is still without an area Biologist. <br /> <br />The Nature Conservancy pilot project is moving forward. The Department is working with them to <br />permit and delineate an area in Hamblin Pond to set up an oyster reef. There have been several meetings <br />and field operations with them in Popponesset and Waquoit Bays as well. <br /> <br />th <br />May 13 was AmeriCorps Day. 13 volunteers came and assisted in removing dormant bottom trays from <br />the Mashpee River. Chris has submitted paperwork requesting 2 AmeriCorps Days next year. <br /> <br />It was reported that the Department is currently fully staffed with 3 returning seasonal workers. <br /> <br />Chis stated that he travelled to New Jersey in June and picked up 1 million quahog seed from Bay Farm. <br />The Department is awaiting seed from Clam Daddy and 1 million oysters from ARC. Chris said they <br />should be ready in about 2 weeks. 1 million quahog seed was picked up from ARC and just over 1.1 <br />million oyster seeds were picked up from Cape Cod Oyster. <br /> <br />Chris and the Director of Natural Resources, Ashley Fisher gave a talk at the Cape Coastal Conference <br />that was held in Hyannis on June 16th about the future of Shellfish Propagation on Cape Cod. <br /> <br />The Department has undergone and completed First Responder Training. <br /> <br />Mr. Pfundstein inquired about the use of the Mooring Info database. Chris and Tyler explained its uses <br />and how it works in keeping track of infractions and citations, how people are able to make mooring <br />payments using it and that the Department is also able to track hours and maintenance on their vessels and <br />vehicles. <br /> <br />Tyler Grady gave a presentation on the shell fish seed detailing when the seed was purchased, where it <br />was purchased from, the quantity that was purchased and where the seed ultimately ended up within the <br />fishery. He explained that they are keeping track of when the animals are sorted, the counts, densities, <br />when they are split and then broadcasted. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />2 <br /> <br /> <br />
