a hot topic with the future of 90% of our seed for Cape shellfish industries it produced in jeopardy
if solutions to mounting production costs are not found. Economic impact and perhaps Nitrogen
mitigating efforts throughout the Cape will be affected if this program closes their doors. Cape
Cod Water Resources Restoration Project updates including the Mashpee/Santuit Pond dam and
fish ladder rebuilding project were discussed. Ms. Laurent reported that construction would begin
again this spring and completion was planned well before the deadline of funds allocation was
reached in September of 2013.
Public Access: Nothing new to report
Waterways Improvement Plan and Dredging: Mr. Bates reported on his report to the Mashpee
BOS last Monday night on the RFP for the Mashpee River dredge project. He discussed some of
the concerns that the BOS had with the allocation of funds required in order to produce a detailed
report and plan without knowing whether the Conservation Committee was in favor of such a
project or not. Detailed plans are necessary so that the Conservation Commission and other
agencies could respond with their approval and /or concerns. Chairman Bates felt that all was on
track and that he would be meeting with Town Counsel, the Town Manager and the Town’s
Conservation agent as the process moves forward. Ken also reported on the progress being made
towards this winter and spring’s maintenance dredges of the 1916 channel and Popponesset
approach channel.

New Business: Mashpee DPW Director Catherine Laurent introduced to the Commission
her plans to restore the Great River ramp, pier and float system. As one of the three public ways
to saltwater in the Town of Mashpee, there was considerable work required to stabilize and
improve the site. Cost estimate was around $390,550. She also mentioned a $12,000 emergency
repair to the three Town landings that would be required prior to next season. Harbormaster
Stephen Mone asked if ADA compliance was in the considerations for the Great River repair. Ms.
Laurent replied no, not at this time. It was discussed how important it would be that all have the
ability to enjoy what makes Mashpee such a special place. Access to the water is the reason
Mashpee enjoys such a favorable opinion with so many who summer here several members
mentioned. Additional discussions centered on the process and the recommendation of contacting
the Falmouth Harbor Master for his insight due to the considerable restoration projects completed
recently through out the Town of Falmouth on their many saltwater ramps, floats and piers. The
Commission advised Ms Laurent they would support her project and assist with presentations if
requested.
A vote to adjourn was made by Steve Pinard and second by Paul Zammito @ 1031 AM.NEXT
MEETING is scheduled for November 13th, 9:00AM, Meeting Room 3 of Town Hall
Ken Bates – Chairman
Steve Pinard – Vice Chairman
Al Wickel – Secretary
Tim Leedham
Stephen Mone
Bill Taylor
Paul Zammito
