This publication is the result of a collaborative effort and compiles data which will
be submitted to the state and discusses the efforts to get the state to designate Cape
Cod as an "economic target area." The target area designation allows distressed
neighborhoods to be named as "economic opportunity area." Towns that establish
opportunity areas can then offer special state and local tax incentives to attract
business growth. Sid will be giving the publication to Bob Whritenour and he
thanked Ted for his participation in this effort and complimented John O'Brien, the
Executive Director of the Cape's economic council, who brought the towns together.
Tom Potts thanked Sid for his efforts.
OTHER BUSINESS
Nelson asked to have the floor before this meeting adjourned to take a moment so
that this committee could reflect on their progress this year and complimented
everyone on the smooth operation, due in large part to Tom Potts's leadership. He
wanted it clear that some comments, recently published, had been taken out of
context and he was disheartened because of Torn Potts's resignation at this time. He
emphasized that town politics can destroy a good person and a committee -- and
cautioned that people should be careful when they make public statements about
one another. it's disturbing that Tom has chosen to resign and not good for the
town when things like this happen. Nelson said he is trying to understand what
happened and feels it's unfortunate that the committee is losing a person of Tom
caliber.
Sid thanked Tom for what he has accomplished on this committee and said he
appreciated what this committee had done for the town.
Ted wanted to know what had happened, why Tom was resigning.
6
