3
TOWN OF MASHPEE
BOARD OF HEALTH
September 17, 1998
Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m.
Members present: Robert F. Cram, Sr., Steven R. Ball and John T. Doherty
THE TAPE IS NOT PART OF THE MEETING IT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF
TRANSCRIPTION ONLY.
Mr. Robert F. Cram, Chairman
1.) Warrants signed.
2.) Mr. Ball motioned to accept the minutes of August 27, 1998,Mr. Cram seconded.
The minutes of September 10, 1998 were not prepared in time for this meeting.
3.) Letter from Barnstable B.O.H. re: Waters Ede Subdivision - Mr. McQuaid
relayed, `Waters Edge received draft approval back in 1988." "There hasn't been any
activity to my knowledge since then." "The proposal must be resubmitted to D.E.P. for
their approval."
Acknowledged.
4.) Latest V.O.C. pond test results - Mr. McQuaid stated, "This is my most recent
round of sampling." "The results are similar to what they have been all summer." "There
has been detection of M.T.B.E. which we know is below 10 p.p.m. and the drinking water
standards is 70 p.P.m.." "We attribute that to recreational boating." "There was also one
hit of xylene at .09 where the maximum contaminant level is 10,000 p.p.m.." "Xylene is
attributable to plastics which may be attributed to the vial cap that I used or a lab error."
".09 when the maximum contaminant level is 10,000 is absolutely insignificant." "At our
last plume adhoc meeting Selectmen Caffyn suggested I prepare a report for a news
release indicating that the military is paying for this and that we have had non-detects all
summer long." "I decided not to do that because I can't in all good conscience say that
it's been absolutely non-detect all summer long." "I would have to say that we have had
hits of M.T.B.E. and xylenes at very low levels." "I think that would scare people and I
don't want to be dishonest but for the general public to understand the levels, the
magnitude of the hits would cause more of a concern then is necessary."
I
