Mashpee Finance Committee <br /> i <br /> Minutes <br /> Tuesday, September 1, 1998 <br /> Present; Chairwoman Nancy Goulart <br /> Dean Arden, Steve Cashman, Alec watt <br /> Absent: Sidney Golub,Mike l umin <br /> Also George Baker,Fire Chief <br /> Present: Deborah Dams, Town Clerk <br /> Meeting Called to Omer by Chairwoman Goulart at 6:46 p.m. at the Mashpee Town Hall, <br /> Meeting Room#1,on Tuesday, September 1, 1998. <br /> DISCUSSION BY GEORGE BAKE& FHIIE CHIEF: <br /> October Town Meetina,Article 1 —Fire Station Renovation Account: <br /> Chief Baker informed the Finance Cottee that.Articic 14 for the Fire Station Renovation <br /> Aunt will be pulled from the warrant. He noted that at the last committee meeting,which <br /> was about a month ago,the committee was uncomfortable with the direction they were going <br /> financially. He added that they are regrouping right now and will be meeting again within <br /> the month to determine which direction they go with the current architect or another <br /> architectural firm, depending on contractual issues and legal outlets. <br /> Chief faker stated that the challenge was that the cost estimates coning in were getting <br /> greater and greater in the amount—far beyond what the Selectmen originaffy imposed in the <br /> amount of$11,600000. Chief Baker stated that 2-1/2 years ago when the first feasibility was <br /> done, it started with a construction cost of$1,600,000. However,the construction cost is only <br /> one part of building a building. The cost has escalated to$3,000,000 due to other building <br /> costs a builder's market as opposed to a buyer's market,and there may have been a low <br /> estimate previously. <br /> Where was discussion regarding the renovation of the fire station and the new substation <br /> proposed, <br /> Chief Baker stated that they dope to come back for May Town Meeting with plans and a cost <br /> estimate. <br /> Upon questioning by r. Arden regarding the time scale for the renovation of the fire station <br /> and the new substation, Chief Baker informed the Committee that prior to the deadline for the <br /> May muting,they would come back with a suet plan for the renovation with a May Town <br /> Meeting funding, July 1 contract bid date,probably an October groundbreaking,and nine <br /> months to one and one-half years to complete. For the substation,they are looking at 2-1/2 to <br /> years for the funding. <br /> i <br />
