Auburn Associates
The meeting was called to order at 7:15 p.m. by Tom Potts, and
subsequently turned over to Beth Siegel. Ms. Siegel distributed
a Progress Report stating that the research has been completed,
and a preliminary rough draft report has been prepared. Ms.
Siegel will review the findings and recommendations from this
report, and the Partnership will receive a copy next month.
She further stated that Mt. Auburn has not yet been paid for
their services even though they submitted an invoice last month,
and Mr. Fudala stated that Bob Whritenour has to approve the
invoice and this will be followed up.
Ms. Siegel followed the attached OUTLINE FOR MASHPEE REPORT,
October 24, 1995. Her primary focus was on the key findings
and recommendations that came out of the research project
summarized briefly as follows:
Findings:
- The new high school, Boch Performing Arts Center, and the
Wildlife Refuge and other projects will significantly enhance
the infrastructure.
- Finding the balance between environmental protection and
economic development will be a challenge.
- Mashpee is in a poor competitive position for most industry
off Cape, but very competitive relative to other Cape
communities.
- Resource base is not maximized ( linkages with its research
infrastructure) .
- Economic development is not defined by real estate development
nor limited to increasing the tax base; it includes all of
its resources.
- Alternative employment options for Mashpee residents are
needed, not only permanent, employer-based jobs.
- The history of fragmentation and discord needs to be addressed.
