MASHPEE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION MEETING <br /> MARCH 26 , 2002 <br /> Present : Jan Strickland , Gordon Green , Donna Lopez , Myrna Nuey , <br /> (Marita Scott arrived 5 : 45 p.m. ) , Sherwood Fluery , <br /> Luanne St. Cyr , Stephanie Tobey Roderick , Toni Saunders. <br /> Chairman Jan S. opened the meeting at 4 . 35 p.m. at Mashpee Town <br /> Mall. Copies of the No Place for Hate essays were distributed. <br /> Luanne St. Cyr was given the floor to talk about her role in <br /> the high school in her new position as head of student services . <br /> Prior to this, Mrs. St. Cyr was the Assistant Principal , whose <br /> role was that of a disciplinarian. In her new position, Mrs . <br /> St. Cyr oversees Guidance, Alternative Education, and Cape Tech <br /> Vocational. She is the liaison between Guidance and the <br /> Adwinistration. <br /> Mrs . St . Cyr talked about the school to career program whereby <br /> students shadow an ewployer for the day in cooperation with <br /> the Chamber of Cowiuerce. The students spoke at the Chamber <br /> meeting talking about what they learned . The goal is to offer <br /> a half credit course for the seiiiester in a community service <br /> internship. This takes time to develop a relationship with <br /> the business community. <br /> Mrs . St . Cyr attended a three-day peer leadership training caxap <br /> with students from 13 schools . The theme included diversity, <br /> problem solving skills , and civil rights training. The students <br /> identify a problew in their school to work on to improve their <br /> school . The toughest problehi K-12 in Mashpee is bullying and <br /> harrassment. There will be a diversity day next year to learn <br /> about nationalities and cultures through stories and role play. <br /> Sen. O 'Leary came down and offered assistance and funding . <br /> Myrna N. asked what the procedures are for dealing with issues <br /> of diversity. Counseling and administration involvement if <br /> necessary apply . <br /> Gordon G. referred to a teacher problem. Mrs . St . Cyr is the <br /> right person to approach with this type of problem. She <br /> evaluates guidance services . Evaluations of teachers are <br /> performed by the principal and assistant principal . There are <br /> protection laws for teachers which makes it difficult to dismiss <br /> anyone. <br /> Donna L. stated that if there is a zero tolerance policy , then <br /> it should be enforced for teachers as well as students . Students <br /> get punished , so should teachers . Gay kids are afraid to coque <br /> out. <br />
