MASHPEE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION MEETING
APRIL 10 , 200
Present: Jan Strickland, Nor€L€a Kuiiiin, Melbourne Cragwell , Myrna
Nuey , Donna Lopez , Joyce Mason, Marilyn Farren, Sherwood Fleury.
Chairman Jan S. opened the meeting at 4 : 40 p.m. at Mashpee Town
Hall. The Minutes of March 26 , 2002 were moved and accepted
unani€nously..
Comments were exchanged about the multi-cultural festival for
the benefit of Melbourne Cragwell , who was away at that time.
A discussion arose regarding the Superintendent ' s presence in
a hearing process. The committee feels that the Superintendent
can attend meetings upon special. requests .
There is an issue that the school department has its own AA
policy. One policy in the Town seems to suffice.
Joyce Mason asked is the proper procedure in place . The policy
is that issues/complaints are referred to Marilyn Farren ,
Personnel Administrator, whose role is to investigate and come
back to the committee.
Donna L. noted that the No Place for Hate campaign has made
issues wore intense. She takes issue that the current
Superintendent has written a school AA policy after Mr. DeMoura
(the former Superintendent) left .
Mr. Fleury responded by reading that the School Committee will
appoint an AA Committee.
We need to clarify who is the officer for school issues. Marilyn
Farren handles only the Town employee side. The Board of
Selectu€en have no jurisdiction over the school . The
Superintendent is responsible for school related issues. The
Town Administrator is the higher authority and would be
responsible for a finding. Joyce M. stated that we are not
insured in the private sector , and we have no control there.
We need to clear up the role and intent of the AA Committee.
Norma K. suggested perhaps a representative from the Chamber
of Commerce could be on the AA Committee .
Myrna N. stated that the community is larger than the
municipality. Myrna N. is looking out for her community
interests . If she is not representing her community , then she
is not interested in representing the municipality only . Joyce
M. will find out the Selectmen ' s intent as it pertains to
community.
