MASHPEE CONSERVATION COMMISSION <br /> MEETING OF JUNE 151 1989 <br /> Commissioners present :. G rt ud Simmons , Mary Marsters ,, Patrick Coff , <br /> Joseph Burns , Elliot Rosenberg . <br /> Also present were Robert Sherman , Conservation Agent ; Paul Somerville ,, <br /> Shellfish Officer ;, Flo n Wall , Associate Member . <br /> The meeting was called to order at 7 : 05 p ,m, <br /> MASHPEE WOODLANDS COMMITTEE : Mary Marsters Marsstood down . Joseph Burns <br /> was acting chairman . <br /> Joanne Eerragam o , Chairman introduced members : Mrs . Pierce , <br /> Bob Sposta , Dean Bates , Bill Bryant and Earle Marsers . <br /> She outlined what she had spoken to Peter Jacobson about . Their program <br /> began with the application in 1985 for Self Help monies , They guide <br /> themselves by the prospectus and management plan submitted . $3-1/2 <br /> million has been acquired from the state and as explained to Peter <br /> Jacobson , this money obligates them to fulfill the responsibilities <br /> as outlined in these programs . She stated Mr . Jacobson felt they should <br /> pretty Bruch let sleeping dogs lie . <br /> In regards to trail maintenance , they have followed this procedure since <br /> 1987 . Every trail program is discussed at their committee meetings and <br /> minutes of all meetings submitted to the Con e ry a i t n Commission . They <br /> then prepared the RDA and the first trail program was set up with acting <br /> agent at that time , John V rkonda . <br /> They have had trails , an osprey platform a-nd the big parking lot at <br /> Quinaquisset with paper work ' submitted . They have had on-site visits <br /> by John Varkonda , Lisa Hanscom and most recently on the trail in quest- <br /> ion , <br /> uost- <br /> ion , they had fob Sherman and Tori. Fuda l a who looked at the. trail before <br /> any work was done . A person from the Soil conservation Commission and <br /> someone from Greenbriar have been there a number of tines and , most <br /> recently , Bill Clark and Bill Trask from the county Extension Service <br /> have visited . These peoplell have been asked if there is some type <br /> f habitat that should be avoided . A possible fox den was pointed out <br /> and a trail rerouted . To their knowledge , there isn ' t anything that is <br /> an endangered species . <br /> Mrs . Ferragamo stated they may not be knowledgeable in terms of being <br /> naturalists but have sought professional people to guide thea . <br /> The volunteers do not use any power tools , they hand clip , after which <br /> the Gravely , a lawn mower , comes in . Some huckleberries and wild blue- <br /> berries are cut out . Last spring , 12 dozen daffodils were planted and- <br /> they are replanting trees and checkerberries . They are not destroying <br /> the area as implied . <br /> A letter from Bill McKay was read stating "perpetual maintenance" was <br /> part of the original application . He stated he was not cutting paths <br /> to the river edge , the closest he came to the river was a 40 foot high <br /> bluff about loo feet from the river providing the publ is with a scenic <br /> overlook . From there the route follows ars already existing path plus <br /> a cut back to the parking lot . He did not tear up all the humus , cut no <br /> l ady s l i peers and affected no endangered species . 1hereve r he has main- <br /> tained <br /> ain-toined trails or creamed small clearings for benches , it has created <br /> new growth of these species resulting from additional sunlight afforded . <br />
