JCA urged the committee to begin recording the usage of the current senior center building—how many
people use the center each day.
John Catlin raised the following issues to be aware of when planning a basement: moisture, darkness,
the need to provide accessibility from outside the building, sprinkler system requirements, bathroom and
elevator requirements. Unfinished basements run around$75 to$80 per square feet to build. A second
floor might be a preferable option.
Iry Goldberg raised the issue of serious problems in the event of a fire, i.e., how does one get a
wheelchair bound person down the stairs with the elevator not functioning. JCA stated that all second
floors have fire rooms that are two hour rated rooms.
SEPTIC CONSIDERATIONS
There is some question about the ability of the area to support the senior center septic system, in view of
all the buildings in the area. John Catlin will check with the architects who built the Mashpee Fire Station
on this issue. JCA also needs from the committee: boring logs from the fire station, a perk test from the
Town, site plans for the fire station, and plans for the new roadway.
It was agreed that the group should meet once each week for the present time. The next meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Mashpee Town Hall.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:00 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
%i4 ?
