TOWN OF MASHPEE
SENIOR CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of the Meeting of 6/08/02
Committee Attendees: Also Attending:
Irving Goldberg Jim Long, COA
Marty Henry Lynne Waterman, COA
Arthur Weinstein Tom Fudala, Town Planner
Betty Nichols George Baker, Mashpee Fire Chief
Jean Noussee Alan Samry, Mashpee Enterprise
Chairman Iry Goldberg opened the meeting at 2:10 PM. Marty Henry made a motion, seconded by Betty
Nichols, that the minutes from the 4/26/02 meeting be accepted. The motion was approved unanimously.
Iry reminded the committee that we are on a very short track. We heed to finalize plans for the new
Center with JCA by the end of June. It will take two months to prepare the grant application design
document for an August/September delivery.
Tom Fudala advised that we include in our plans the allowance for the concept of a new road, in case it is
ever approved. Tom also advised that we stay with the roundabout driveway in front of the center,
making it a one-way driveway. This will be ideal for the fire station.
George Baker, Mashpee Fire Chief, made the following suggestions to the Committee, based upon his
experience with problems that occurred with the new Fire Station. Involve Sheldon Hamblin in our plans
for a compliance review to ensure we meet required codes for accessibility and egress. Have the
Mashpee Building Inspector look at our plans before finalizing. Have Ray Martini review the plans for any
maintenance problems he might foresee.
Road and Septic Status
The relocation of the road with traffic lights is extremely important to the new Senior Center. We cannot
build a new Center without a road. The Selectmen are working with Mashpee Commons to finalize the
plans for the October Town Meeting.
With regard to the septic system, if Mashpee Commons does not vote to connect us into their system, we
will install our own.
Plan for Town Election
Fliers will be handed out at the Stop&Shop, the transfer station, and at the polling place at Quashnet
School. Display boards will be posted also, at the polls. Iry asked that committee members volunteer a
couple of hours during the day at the polls to be available for questions about the plans for the new
Center. Jim Long offered to assist, provided he gets the okay from Town Administrator.
Response to any question about why there is no plan for a basement is twofold: 1)topography-the
building site is too flat; we would need to dig down 12 feet for a basement, which would require a very
steep entryway from outside. 2)cost-requirements for excavation, retaining walls, and installation of an
elevator make it prohibitively expensive.
Response to specific requests for the Center, i.e., exercise equipment, pool tables, should be that the
usage of the Center will evolve over time; we are allowing for ample square footage to handle any needs.
