TOWN OF MASHPEE
SENIOR CENTER BUILDING COMMITTEE
Minutes of the Meeting of 4/17/02
Committee Attendees: Also Attending:
Iry Goldberg Jim Long, COA
Ed Adams Joyce Mason, Town Administrator
Betty Nichols John Catlin, JCA
Jean Noussee Matt Mangus, JCA
Marty Henry
Art Weinstein
Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 2:30 PM. Approval of minutes from the 3/09/02 meeting
was tabled until the next meeting.
SEPTIC SYSTEM STATUS
JCA has aerial photos but does not have the full survey report yet, or the site plan for the previous new
Town Hail project 10 years ago. Joyce Mason does have the soil boring plans for the site available from
10 years ago. JCA can still perc the site and do elevations without survey but will need a full survey
asap.
JCA ADJACENCY PLAN REPORT
The current plans presented were based upon committee input from the 4/09/02 meeting. Plans are
adjustable, based on the committee's wishes. Highlights from the current adjacency plan include:
Entry—the front entry to the building will be northerly, with the parking lot behind the north entry.
Activity areas—areas for public use and activity will be facing southwest, with no other buildings in view.
Bathrooms—have been moved across from the lounge area, adjacent to the great room since this room
will be used by outside organisations in future years.
Staff area—440 square feet. Copier and storage area will be located between the staff area and the
director's office.
Computer room-560 square feet. It will be wired but not set up with computers, making it available as
another classroom.
Arts&Crafts room—568 square feet.
Future expansion—the building location on the site allows for future expansion both south and west.
Great room dividers—the number of dividers for the great room is the key issue that must be
determined now. The committee agreed to make a second field trip to the Orleans Senior Center to
revisit their Great Room setup which has 2 dividers. Jim Long will talk to the Orleans staff to discuss their
congregant meal program and how they use the three rooms. The issue will be resolved after the field
trip, on April 22.
Portico—there will be a very generous portico over the front entrance. JCA recommends not having the
driveway under the portico—too many accidents occur with this arrangement. The traffic flow will offer
the following options: drive in, drop off and leave; drive in, drop off and park; drive in, park, and walk in
under a covered portico to the front entry.
Service entry—will use the side drive of the Fire Station, and will be to the left of the Center entry.
Abutters—the building will be 75 to 100 yards away from their property, with thick woods as a buffer.
Second floor expansion—2 x 6 exterior walls placed 16 inches on center will allow for a second level
expansion on the southeast exposure of the building.
Ed Adams will investigate the proper procedure to have in place for the receipt of donations for the new
Senior Center.
