Page 2
Leisure Services Advisory Council Meetine dated 12/20/05
Old Business Field Development — DPW put in Capital Request for fields. Gus does
not think they will get any money. Money will go for public safety.
Lorraine Murphy wanted to know how the money that was donated is handled. Gus
explained that we have a Donation Account and the money would stay in Leisure
Services. The donor many times earmarks what the money would be used for.
Gus announced that there would be a Community Preservation Act meeting on Tuesday,
January 17, at 7:00 PM. A discussion on the Land Bank funds and Community
Preservation Act took place — how some of the funds can be used for recreation
(excluding a building or programming), and can be used for land development.
Liz Hendricks asked who maintains the playgrounds. Peter Thomas said that it depends
whose land it is on. Peter Thomas said that the Town has not done anything about the
fields. The most important thing would be having everyone educated on the process. Liz
Hendricks said that Quashnet is trying to build a new playground. If PTO wanted to put
in a new playground, they would have to go through the application process.
Gus Frederick mentioned that he is trying to have other groups meet with this Committee
and go over policy and procedures of the use of fields. Gus would like to bring in Brad
from the school also. Gus passed out a copy of the Policy for use of Heritage Park and a
draft for the use of Mashpee Public School playing fields. Gus would like to bring in the
youth sports groups to a meeting.
Kids Klub Pre -School and School-age programs — Peggy Geary told the Committee
that things are going well at Preschool. A lot of money had to be spent on the building.
The Toddler group is full, 22 three year olds, 21 four year olds in the morning and 16 in
the afternoon. The 3 and 4 year old group has 13. One teacher left due to pregnancy, and
we will need to hire an additional staff member.
There are 30 plus children in the morning and 30 plus children in the Afterschool.
Adventure Club has over 20 students. We have a new person, Walter Lodi, overseeing
Vacation Club.
Gus went over the Budget for camp. We are still waiting for some money from the
Special Needs Department for reimbursement for summer camp. Gus past out a time line
for our brochures. Gus showed the new insert that would be in the paper. We included
an ad for the Preschool in it.
