•
Katherine Brown, Mashpee resident stated she is anxious to hear
about what environmental studies were done on each site .
Mr. Dinizio explained soil samples were taken from each site . No
contamination or hazardous material was found on either site. Ms.
Brown asked what will the environmental impact be , what will have
the least impact to water, animal life, etc. ?
Tom Fudala stated the 151 site has endangered species identified
and is entirely within a recharge area and is near the Quashnet
River and is within the proposed National Wildlife refuge. The
Center site does not have identified endangered species , only a
portion is within a recharge area and it has an area of wetland.
The center site would have the least environmental impact.
Michael Peese, West Dennis, stated he is concerned about the
unique environmental qualities to the Center site. He believes
the area has an underground stream, flowing to the Mashpee River
and Waquoit Bay and effecting the whole watershed.
Tom explained this site is a recharge area for the Mashpee river
which flows to Popponesset Bay. The 151 site is on Quashnet
River which flows to Waquoit Bay . No matter where you go in town
you will be in the recharge area for one.
Mr. McGee asked about the performing arts center, is it a done
• deal , where will it be on the site?
The Committee reviewed the 151 plan and siting proposals . Some
plans work with the performing arts center, some don ' t.
Ms. Hendricks thinks the school makes more sense at the 151 site
because of the access.
Ms. Crowley stated there are jobs there (at Stop and Shop) , the
library is there, it already has town water.
Mr. McGee asked about putting the school on the base?
Tom explained this is supposed to be a community center, not just
a school building. The Center site was looked at because a
majority of students are in this part of town , they could walk or
bike to school and use the facilities after school .
Mr. McGee asked if the Committee sees plans to build in that ( 151
area) of town? Doesn ' t Fields Point have permits to build many
houses? Isn 't there land available between the Quashnet River
and the rotary?
Tom explained Fields Point does not have the zoning or permits to
do a large amount of residential housing they had planned . The
available land towards 28 is commercial , not residential .
Steve Greelish does not agree with Tom' s assessment. The real
center of the population, at the time when high school is full ,
is yet to be determined. There is available land on that side of
• town .
Tom explained that this land (Center site) will be developed if
we don' t put a school on it.
2
