Jr. DeMoura would rather give up a space than cut they size of the
classrooms. He suggested eliminating the large group classroom at this
time.
** Merry Sue made a motion to delete the large group classroom from
the program for a savings of 1 , 700 sq feet. Janice seconded the
motion .
Discussion :
Paul agrees they should cut the large group classroom but with a caveat ,
asking the architects to remember it as an item that has been deferred , not
eliminated .
Steve suggested, if the program requires that kind of space, considering
moveable walls in some classrooms .
** Merry Sue amended the motion to add this item has been deferred and
ask the architects to remember it. All members were in favor. **
Gus Fredricks said he has looked at the office space for Leisure Services.
Is there a way he could share space with another area? Otherwise 100 sq
feet will not be enough .
Peter stated the Selectmen do not want Leisure Services to have a permanent
office in the high school .
Nancy Caffyn said the Selectmen never discussed that issue .
She does not see much community in this building , she doesn ' t see it
physically . 100 sq feet is impossible to work in . To run a community
educational program you have to have comfortable office space to do it in .
4e want to use the facility 100%.
Peter said her point is well taken but the Committee ' s previous guidance
was the Leisure Services permanent office will not be at the high school .
Nancy said she feels bad about that but she does not know where that came
from, the Selectmen never discussed it. She looked at Sandwich high school
today , their community program' s office is in the school .
Merry Sue noted the community aspect is just a large office, if you look at
the school you don ' t know what the community uses are. Every space at the
school can be used by the community. For Mashpee , people would sign up at
town hall and then go to the high school for their class . They don ' t need
to check-in at the high school office space.
Nancy said the community aspect of the high school was sold to the town , we
want community use. Personally, she wants the office at the high school .
Merry Sue said Nancy stating that this is not a community use building
bothers her. All of it is designed for community use - the access, the
double gyms, the only thing not here is the main office and we will not get
reimbursed for that office .
Peter asked if we get 5% sq footage reimbursed from the State for community
use?
Mr. Frennette said the cost of construction will probably govern . If it is
not for the education program, it will not be funded. He feels we are
already over budget.
Bill Jones said Leisure Services should be treated the same as the
administration offices. Gus needs the space but there will soon be a new
configuration of town hall and his office space should be here .
fancy disagrees , this is considered education space and she thinks it will
be reimbursed.
4
