Sd Frennette said they will put a note adjacent to Leisure Service office
and come up with a way to make it a productive space , through sharing . He
will talk with Gus and explore his needs. This will be a critical item
that needs attention .
The Committee needs a resolution from the Selectmen on this issue.
** Paul made a motion to ask the Selectmen to put on their agenda the
issue of where the main office for Leisure Services should be - in
town hall or the high school ? What space will they need to house
that program? Merry Sue seconded the motion. All members in
favor. **
Mr. Frennette said they will meet with Gus, get a more definitive program
and try to locate it. They will also be working diligently to zone this
building so athletics and classrooms can be used independently, while the
rest of the building is shut off.
Athletic Program:
The Committee reviewed the report from the Subcommittee of Merry Sue ,
Dr. DeMoura and Gus Fredricks .
Football , needs lights . They chose 700 sets for the stadium.
She reminded everyone these spaces are just for high school program, 7 &
8th grade will require that much more space.
Baseball /softball- little league does not need any more fields so those can
be eliminated. Lights should be planned for the future .
Water - should the fields be irrigated? Which ones?
tennis- they suggest coin operated lights.
Lacrosse - soccer fields are big enough .
Paul said this is a great wish list, but knowing the cost of construction ,
we have quickly exceeded our budget.
Bill Martiros noted , during the town hall project, many people wanted an
outdoor place for concerts . Maybe this could be incorporated .
Bill Jones read last week there was a question of do we want a football
team. The operating costs are substantial .
Janice said this is not our decision to make , it is a school committee
decision.
Ian said at Nauset High School , for the stadium, field and tract it cost
$1 . 5 million .
Paul asked why they suggested lights for the football field?
Merry Sue said football , soccer and field hockey can all play night games
on that field . You can then charge admission . She is not saying we have to
put the lights in now .
Ed Frennette said they can generate a very tentative sketch of what might
be on the site, a minimum and an optimum. Then Ian can roughly price it
out. The Committee reviewed the minimums .
Janice told the Committee to keep in mind that not all fields are necessary
to be there in 1996 . It can and will be an ongoing process but we need to
know and plan for all that is coming.
Ian questioned the 700 seats for the stadium?
They decided it should be 700 home and 500 visitors .
Merry Sue noted that our school system does not have any other fields to
use .
5
