oecause they want nothing within a 1 /2 mile . Tom also mentioned there is a
wetlands area next to the Housing Authority parcel .
There is also an access road running through the site.
Tom said it has no status . It is not an ancient way .
Mark discussed the intersection of Old Barnstable Road and Rte 151 .
Traffic moves very fast on 151 . There will be a need for queuing lanes for
buses to move up to speed onto 151 or a traffic signal at the intersection .
151 should be used as emergency access only. They suggest the entrance be
al least 300 feet onto Old Barnstable Road .
Tom suggested the highest point of the curve would be the ideal access .
Mark explained there are 3 issues involved in the site arrangement: the
performing arts center , the high school and the orientation of the fields.
1 . All the fields are to the back of the school . The performing arts center
is near the power lines , but still over one hundred feet away . It was
moved to the east of where they have shown the location .
Peter thought this arrangement cut the school off from the river.
2 . Orients the school to the river but you arrive a the school from the
back.
3 . School oriented to Old Barnstable Road , southerly portion of the site is
used for the fields . The performing arts center would have the option of
continuing the school ' s entrance road , entering from 151 or entering south
of the housing authority property .
Paul Griffin asked , since the housing authority units are built only on the
first third of the lots and there are 4 acres with nothing on it, if we
really needed to take that property could we?
iom said there are 6 units on 6 acres because the town standard was 1 unit
per acre . The property is owned by the Housing Authority . He doesn ' t know
if we could take it , it would have to be negotiated . It involved a town
meeting vote to give them the property .
Ray suggested trading them for the piece with the wetlands adjacent to
theirs . Their ' s is a flat piece , good for athletic fields.
4 . School oriented towards 151 . Some people want to see the school - it
should represent the success of the community .
5 . Moved the performing arts center towards Old Barnstable Road, 151
intersection so the high school would have the southerly portion of the
site, closer to the river. The fields would skirt around the perimeter of
the building.
Peter likes having the school near the river , it could be incorporated into
the educational program.
Ray said it would be an opportunity to create nature trails , without having
to cross any roads . The river would be considered part of the campus .
Greg Taylor asked if they could incorporate some shared parking for the two
facilities?
Mark said his suggestion would be to keep it separate.
Tom said keep it separate but within a reasonable distance for back up use .
Option #2 was eliminated . The Committee did not like the road on the river
>ide of the site.
4
