MASHPEE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE MINUTES TUESDAY , JUNE 7 , 1994 Members Present: Peter Dinizio, Merry Sue Ahlgren , Bill Martiros , Bill Jones , Joe Polito, Janice Mills , Steve Greelish , Joan Tavares Also Present: Ed Frenette , Bob Fournier, Mark Chen , Dan Saliene, Ian Aitchison , Dr . Lincoln DeMoura, Gus Fredricks , Tom Fudala, Bob Whritenour MINUTES ** Merry Sue made a motion to approve the minutes of May 26th and May 31st. Joe seconded the motion . Joe questioned the May 31st minutes . TK Thompson said they would need 35 acres for all 3 phases and they will have to re-visit their plans to see if it can still fit. Is that what was said? The Committee agreed Mr .Thompson did say he would eventually need 35 acres. He wants to see if they can squeeze their center in and then come back to the Committee . ** All members were in favor** MEETING WITH COM ELECTRIC REPRESENTATIVE Steve Collings, Senior Environmental Administrator was present representing Com Electric to discuss electra magnetic fields and associated risks . He began by showing a film prepared by the Electric Power Research Institute, what is electra magnetic fields and is there a health risk . Mr.Collings explained the current going to the wire controls the field strength . As you moved away from the source , the field strengths drop off. For example a TV can have a field strength of 25-75 miligaus. He can not tell you what a safe level is . Electricity use in the US has gone up dramatically in the last few decades but the leukemia rate is steady or dropping . If there was a true association , we should see an increase. New York and Florida have established levels of 200 - new construction cannot be within a field of more than 200 miligaus . He took readings from the power lines at the 151 site: at the edge of the right of way (cleared area) it was 5 . 76 , 50 feet away - 2 . 26 , 300 feet away - 0 . 36 . Mr . Collings then put the Gaus meter on top of the TV he had just used , the reading was 54 . 8 If the Committee can get the school more than 100 feet from the power line, the contribution from the line will be negligible . After 20 years of research , there is still not enough evidence to create a limit. Bill Jones said the majority of exposure comes from within the home , have you come up with a probable level within the average dwelling? Mr. Collings said they have done a study like that, the average US home is about 2 . 3 miligaus. Peter asked how far the high school is form the power lines? The gym ( closest to the power lines ) is 1 , 000 feet away . Bill Martiros asked if the town was taken to court on this issue , would these tests be sufficient, would we need anything more substantial from Com Electric? Mr .
