Peter asked Dr . DeMoura if this design has enough flexibility to handle the
junior high on a temporary basis?
Dr. DeMoura said it does .
Special Education- should the rooms be segregated or mixed in with other
classrooms?
Dr. DeMoura explained these are high school children who cannot perform all
the subjects in the regular classroom. It does not mean they are
discipline problems . These will be regular classrooms.
Ed Frenette advised the Committee not to take the decision on house offices
(asst. principal ) lightly . The more you pull them in towards administration,
you pull away from a true house plan .
Mark moved the asst. principal offices to where they would have a view of
the corridor and the outside bus drop off entrance .
Bill Jones has a concern about the bus drop off , will the younger students
be mixing with older?
Dr. DeMoura explained they will be on the same bus and then they will split
and go in different entrances .
Bill said he has heard concerns from parents who don ' t want 7 & 8th grades
mixing with high school students . He does not see a period when at least
the 8th grade will be in this school . He asked Mark , if he was designing a
junior/senior high school , would he have chosen this design?
Mark said he would . Next week he will prepare a diagram showing how they
can allow for some segregation of the two groups .
Bill Jones said it needs to be formally addressed with a plan .
Mark showed that scheme 1 is 187 , 388 gross sq feet , when it is supposed to
be 183 , 000 .
The less corridors, the more efficient. At this point it can all be
improved.
The next scheme they prepared got worse in terms of efficiency .
Scheme 3 is moving towards a solution , it is down to 184, 000 sq feet . They
moved the entrance . The pool can be put on or off cleanly.
Peter asked if the second floor shared classrooms will have window?
Mark said they are suggesting an internal light well , skylights, as a means
of light. This will have to be addressed .
Dr . DeMoura is concerned the supervision is far from the main entrance . _
Mark agreed administration is in a bad place.
Merry Sue said the collaborative room should not be at the main entrance .
Some of these students will need special transportation .
Joe said the light well will cost considerable money, is there a way to get
natural light without it?
Mark said sometimes the light well may be cheaper than an exterior wall .
Mark began working on addressing some of the Committee ' s concerns about
these schemes .
He suggested moving the faculty dining . It would not have a window, but if
it were in the heart of the building it could be used as a meeting space
before and after lunch use .
Merry Sue suggested it not be too far from the kitchen. The room doesn ' t
need to be as big as it is shown , classroom size is sufficient.
He suggested the surverey be kitty corner to the gym and theater and that
5
