Joe asked if Perkins and Will have catalogs to share of the latest in
school furnishings?
Mark Chen said they can ask major manufacturers to get in touch with Dr .
DeMoura. They would be anxious to talk with the Committee.
Ian asked who is responsible for the ultimate FF&E list and budget? The
Committee should take that responsibility .
DISCUSSION WITH ARCHITECT : BUILDING DESIGN
Mark Chen presented 3 different schemes for the building , based on
discussions from last weeks Charrette . The 3 are more of a progression ,
trying to get the building to where the Committee wants it to be .
1 . U shaped academic area, double loaded , bus drop off at the end . What is
good about it - it is very efficient, direct and straight forward . They are
working towards keeping the public 'spaces a compact envelope. Trying to
make it as efficient , internally- corridor space- as we can make it . Mark
suggested a skylit space , for internal light, to some of the second floor
shared classrooms .
Mark explained the box design has less exterior wall area but he would
challenge that it is more efficient.
Bill Martiros asked about using 3 stories , with 2 1 /2 stories exposed
(walkout lower level ) . Some of the non academic space could be in the lower
level ?
Ed Frenette said if might save in terms of the envelope , but now you have
created more stairs , fire code access requirements . This site is flat, not
a hill . The cost of the retaining walls would be so much there would be
little if any savings .
Mark said the cheapest way to design it, would be the box , where 50-60% of
the classrooms would have no windows .
Dr . DeMoura said air quality in a building like that becomes a real
problem.
Ed Frenette said to add a courtyard in the middle of the building ,
maintenance of it would raise the cost substantially . It would have to be
irrigated to be maintained . It is very difficult to grow any vegetation
and it would probably end up hard topped .
Mark continued , what is consistent in the 3 options , the academic space
shape , 2 floors , 18 classrooms per house backed off of common shared
classroom area. The assistant principal office at the corner of the
academic wings .
Ray had suggested asst. principal office at the bus drop off entrance .
This layout has 8 science labs , 4 on each floor with shared storage . The
elevator is near the administration office.
Merry Sue has never seen labs not on the same floor. Whether it works will
depend on how much shared equipment there is .
Dr . DeMoura suggested the assistant principals be closer to the principal ' s
office .
Sill Jones asked how they will handle having the 7th and 8th grades in the
building?
4
