MASHPEE HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING COMMITTEE MINUTES
TUESDAY, JUNE 14 , 1994
TOWN HALL
Members Present: Peter Dinizio, Merry Sue Ahlgren , Bill Martiros , Bill
Jones , Paul Griffin , Joe Polito, Michael Pare, Joan Avant Tavares , Steve
Greelish
Also Present: Ian Aitchison , Ed Frenette , Bob Fournier , Ray Bordwell , Dan
Salien , Dick Foster , Tom Fudala, Bob Whritenour , Gus Fredricks , Nancy
Caffyn
Meeting convened at 4 : 05 p .m.
MINUTES
** Merry Sue made a motion to accept the minutes of June 7 , 1994 . Joe
seconded the motion . All members were in favor.
DISCUSSION RE: HEALTH SERVICES SPACE
Selectmen Nancy Caffyn was present to discuss the possibility of health
clinic space being provided for in the high school . This idea has the
support of the Board of Health and Dr . DeMoura. The goal is to improve the
services provided to the entire community , including school age children .
She explained the Committee she represents quickly pulled some thoughts
together on this subject to present to the Building Committee ( including a
handout) . Nancy suggested this space could be tied into the nurse station
or the leisure service area , with a separate entrance and exit.
The Board of Selectmen support the concept. She hopes it is not too late
for this to be considered .
Peter asked if this clinic would compete with other medical services in
town?
Nancy said it would not. It is really a human services clinic, not medical
clinic, although the VNA would provide immunization .
Peter suggested , since the leisure service space will not be used full
time , maybe it could use that space .
Nancy said Dr . DeMoura thought the nurses station could be expanded ,
because there is a waiting room there already.
Gus Fredricks does not have problem with it being tied into Leisure Service
office space .
Ray asked what kind and how much space they will need?
Nancy suggested 500 sq ft - 2 offices and a waiting room, and/or next to a
conference room that could be used .
Peter said he also spoke with Dr. DeMoura. He was talking about using
current space in the program, not adding space. We should look for
flexibility from spaces that are part of the program.
Ray asked when it will operate?
Nancy said during the day and after school hours , on weekends and all year
long . She apologizes for presenting this at this late date but the idea
just came up . She is following up with the Department of Heath to see if
there is some funding available for this space.
The entrance should be semi-private , could be shared with other functions.
Paul suggested leaving it with the architectural team, see what they can
do. If it can ' t be worked out, it will have to come from free classroom
1
