trailer village and screen the playing fields from winter winds.
There are a number of wetland issues - Quashnet River, Zone II of
P1 well . Propose providing pedestrian access to Mashpee Commons
for the students. Maximizing the setback form the power lines.
He reviewed the options for organizing the site. Build closer to
the center of the site, auditorium, gym, administration up front
with 2 houses of classrooms behind it (with possibility for
expansion) . Fanning out of classroom wings behind community use
areas. Keep football area furthest away form the housing
authority . Building in the center keeps all the playing fields
close to the school . Is it desirable to see the school from Rte
151 or do you want to maintain the rural quality of the road?
Mr. Jeffrey Allen, Selectmen from Brookline spoke on his
experience with Graham Gund, who designed the Lincoln school in
Brookline. Mr. Allen worked on getting the school approved by
the voters , choosing the architect, design phase and overseeing
construction of the building. It was a 6 year project. He
believes the Lincoln school will be a model elementary school
because of Graham Gund Architects. They could not be more
satisfied. They have yet to be criticized for anything to do
with the school by anyone who has seen it. It will be a very
beautiful and functional school . Graham has the ability to take
public comment and build a consensus. They did everything and
more that was asked of them. They were our partners in building
the school .
QUESTIONS
Bill Martiros asked if Mashpee can afford Graham Gund quality?
They responded the Boston Ballet building was built for $100 sq
foot, Waterville Valley for $52sq foot, Lincoln school for $120
sq foot (construction cost) . We put materials in where they
count so buildings look more expensive than they are. They
suggest that you don 't build spaces you cannot afford to operate.
The biggest saving comes form tightening up on the educational
program.
Brookline has a contingency of $700,000 that will not be spent.
They encouraged the use of authentic slate roof, it was
affordable within their scope. Slate has an 80-100 year life.
They did a very detailed cost analysis and it was not the
cheapest but it was not much more than other solutions. They
hope this Committee will visit that school .
Paul Griffin said he did not see any high schools in their
presentation, have you designed any?
Ms. Verbitzki has, before she worked with Graham Gund as did Mr.
Madsen. They have showed library , theaters, dining facilities,
all are part of a high school facility .
Mr. Griffin stated he has visited some high schools and it was
evident that firms who built elementary and middle school did not
understand high school needs.
7
