What ways are there to save energy on the things which cost money
to run the building. They look for rebate programs.
Mr. Hoit said they have a copy of Mashpee's educational specs, as
it exists today. They have worked closely with educators turning
the specs into a cohesive "plant" for the school . Their projects
have ranged from 135-155 sq feet per pupil .
They have worked on over 21 high school projects in Mass .
Medford high for 3, 500 students and Braintree for 2 ,800 . Mr.
Hoit was the architect for those projects.
They have done a lot of site development work. They work hard to
retain as much of the character of the site, the natural
vegetation . The Mashpee site is full of "outdoor classroom
possibilities" .
- Tantasqua High School in Sturbridge was finished 2-3 months
ahead of schedule and under budget. 18 years later the materials
used are all in good shape, including carpeting used in the
corridors.
- Medford High - precast, poured in place concrete. Was built on
quarry. Includes a swimming pool . The phys ed is all inside
because there was no room outside. It won a national design
award.
- Mashpee Middle School addition . They were hired in July with
the expectation the addition open 1 year, 1 month later. They
have received feedback from the teachers that it is bright,
cheerful classroom spaces. They worked hard to touch base with
all town agencies.
Mashpee High School project -
Mr. Bradford and Mr. Hoit spent some time on the site and looked
at some configurations. Mr. Bradford said it is a beautiful site,
densely wooded with a lot to offer.
They plugged in the program to see what the site limits would be.
Existing conditions : densely wooded site. Utilities available on
151 (gas and water) 50 mph on Rte 151 so access should be from
Old Barnstable Rd. Power line easement through the site.
Pockets of wetland area. Quashnet River, could offer a benefit
to the school facility .
Solar orientation - they charted the sun path . They showed the
severe dropoff on the site and proposed setbacks. You could go
into the drop off area but what are the economic tradeoffs.
Program requirements: extensive playfields . The architect wants
to be sure the site is supportive of the facility - the type and
size you have planned. Strekalovsky and Hoit feel strongly that
it is.
There is the issue of the electro magnetic fields, how far away
do you want to stay away from them.
They have an excellent record for good, thorough contract
documents.
2
