Mike Hickey added there are different levels of sophistication
i .e HVAC - what are you willing to pay for the controls of the
system. Usually you look for a simple system. You should
incorporate into the design easy access for the future cabling
system.
Steve Greelish asked about their auditorium/acoustics experience
and how might they handle our "optional " pool?
Mr. Hoit responded they have done a lot of auditorium work.
Natick High has a beautiful auditorium, 800 seats, a complete
acoustic periphery for music and drama. Kevin Ontachi is their
acoustics consultant.
Mike Hickey added the heating and ventilation system has to be
designed so as not to present a noise problem during
presentations.
They suggested calling Bill Zimmerman of Wayland , they just
completed a theater at that High School .
They have done pool work , it is not a huge design issue, it is a
big mechanical issue. They designed pools in Westwood and
Medford high schools. Everything has to be chlorine proof.
Mike Hickey staid they designed a system where the heat given off
from the de-humidifier unit is used to heat the pool .
Peter Dinizio explained Strekalovsky and Hoit made the Building
Committee look good with the Middle School addition project.
Peter asked when was the last complete, new high school designed
by a principal of their firm?
Mr. Hoit designed one in 1976 , but as a principal at Strekalovsky
and Hoit he has not done a new High School .
Peter asked when was the last complete elementary school
designed?
Mr. Hoit stated 1976-77 .
Peter explained Mashpee is thinking of hiring a project
management firm, to work with the architects from day 1 . Have
you worked with an owner who had that type of arrangement? How
would you feel working with a project manager?
Mr. Hoit said they have worked with project managers on private
jobs. They would not have a problem working with one. It is
another level of service to ensure the project will go well . The
Quincy Shipyard project ($10 million) has one.
Mr. Hoit explained they are very active with the school building
assistance department developing criteria, and they are the ones
who will approve or disapprove what you are doing. We have
design experience and sensitivity to design. Over the last 16
years we have designed all of the elements in your
requirements/program. We have experience with the town and will
be sensitive to the needs of the community and of the committee.
Bill Jones stated the sketch they presented of "Mashpee High"
seems extravagant on the roof area. He asked if they had
designed a building with a heat recovery system, using heat pumps
and exchangers? It cost more to maintain but with the rise in
4
