they see the program they can specifically see how the area is
best used.
Bob Whritenour asked about the conceptual rending of the High
School . Could they take us briefly through the merits of this
type of design?
Mr. Hoit explained it is not just a huge block structure. In
this design every teaching station has windows that open to allow
for circulation . They minimize the flat roof area. They tried
to create the scale of a village.
Mr. Whritenour asked if they made any major functional sacrifices
for this design vs. the traditional compact design?
Mr. Hoit aid no. The sketch was just to give the Committee a
sense of their thoughts on the design . They do advocate pitched
roof and natural light.
Al Polsi asked what they would consider the cost effectiveness of
that design to be, would that design cost more?
Mr. Hoit said it would not have a higher cost. It is very
appropriate for a 1350 pupil high school . The lowest cost is a
shoebox with a lot of interior space but then there are added
mechanical costs for interior ventilation and air conditioning.
THE DESIGN PARTNERSHIP OF CAMBRIDGE
Present were Doug Flockhart, founder, David Finney , Bill
Brainard, Peter Constable from TDPC and Peter Evans from
Universal Engineering and Roger Kallstrom, Landscape Architect.
Mr. Flockhart said the firm was founded in 1980 . Prior to that
he was a Vice President at Earl Flansburg . He designed 7 high
schools with that firm. He also wrote 3 sets of educational
specs for Flansburg. He has since written 7 specs for high
schools and middle schools with Design Partnership.
He asked the Committee to remember 3 words which are the key to
their approach - choice, balance and context.
The key issue effecting Mashpee's project are educational
technology, site planning issues and project management and
project control .
He presented examples of their previous work (some while he was
with Flansburg) .
- Marlboro High school for 2 , 800 students. 3 houses , each with
an administration center . Very compact, circulation is limited.
An efficient net to gross ratio. Auditorium' s back wall are
demountable but fixed seating reduces flexibility.
- Methuen - 2 , 500 student. 8 teaching station field house and a
hockey rink larger than Boston Garden .
- Pittsfield- addition and renovation including a pool and TV
studio.
- Rockport high school - 180 , 000 sq ft of new construction.
Community use spaces, auditorium used extensively. 450 seats,
lighting system for theater, removable seats , tiered seating in
6
