Merry Sue Ahlgren asked what kind of materials do they see going
in to make the building comfortable for teachers and students?
Mr. Flockhart said they suggest a lot of natural light, but in a
controlled fashion. Carpets , but must first identify the wet
areas . For Marthas Vineyard, they did daylight studies to get
the light angles to know where in the room to put the chalkboard.
Laser Board is a very unique product - markers can be used and
erased and you can project on it.
Bill Jones said this was a very refreshing discussion . They are
the first group to start by talking about education; he was very
impressed with it. His concerns are the energy efficiency of
this building - not at today 's energy costs . Over the life of
this building there will be very different energy costs. Have
you given thought to energy efficiency as part of the
configuration of the building?
Mr. Flockhart said there are many choices and balance is needed.
In Marlboro they designed a very compact building, like an office
building, reducing the exterior surface and making it more energy
efficient. However, they had to air condition it because of the
heat build up. They have designed classrooms without windows, but
without windows you need air conditioning . There are ventilation
requirements in school that are not needed in office buildings.
At Martha's Vineyard high school , they requested a southerly
orientation but on the other side of the building it is a
northerly one.
Peter Evans said there are automatic light dimmers that work with
daylight. Utility companies fund some of these things, offer
rebates , but it is hit or miss .
There are architectural materials to be used. They use more
insolation than the code requires. They will do feasibility
studies to show the payback.
Peter Dinizio asked for their most recent, new project completed?
In the last 15 years there has been a swing away from new
construction. The majority of their work is addition and
renovation. The Marthas Vineyard and Rockport projects are the
same scope as Mashpee's. Addition and renovation is more
difficult than building a new building.
Rockport would be the best example for Mashpee to view. It was
105,000 sq feet of new construction. A $13 million project with
only 1% change orders .
They have done elementary schools in Swansea and Greenfield.
Mr. Flockhart designed Methuen and Marlboro high schools while
with Flansburg .
Mr. Dinizio asked if they ever had any lawsuits against them?
They have not.
Peter said he was very impressed with David Finney's persistence
in getting this interview scheduled . How would they use that
attitude to keep this project on track and moving along?
Mr. Finney stated with aggressive scheduling. The milestones
have to be spelled out and met.
10
