spaces.
The pool is still the element causing the sq footage to exceed the
parameters. This issue will have to be dealt with in the not to distant
future. Dr. Collabro said not to let it get in the way of establishing
space needed for the educational program.
It was his understanding the DOE said they would support the pool within
the parameters, but he wants to see that it writing.
The present draft, gross sq footage with the pool is 188, 538. It is off by
about 5 , 500.
Dr. Collabro reminded the Committee they are working against a dollar
figure as well .
Bill Martiros asked if 2 gyms is better than 1 large gym with split use?
Dr. Collabro said it is written for 2 double gyms , so there is separate
space for practice with games going on. He does not think there will be
added expense because if you need 4 stations, with equipment and staff,
whether there is a solid wall dividing it or not will not impact on the
cost.
Dr. Collabro said the State used the enrollment numbers from the town
planner and took the mid point of the high and low projections . He does
not know which figures they looked at.
Peter asked if this is accepted practice or are they trying this on
Mashpee?
Dr. Collabro said it seems to him they are trying to justify arriving at a
decision that will allow Mashpee to build the most school they could . They
tried to get as close to the 1350 as they could . He believes it was a
compromise.
Peter asked if it was a political decision?
Dr. Collabro said he does know that a lot of people called them with
concerns. They said they were going to get 3rd party projections .
Tom Fudala said he thinks they used his December 1992 projections, they
used the mid point of the year 2 , 000 for grades 7-12 . The mid point of
high and low for his December 1993 figures would be 1210 students.
Paul asked if it makes sense for the town planner to write a letter back to
them with this information?
Dr. Collabro said it's a difference of 30 people, 1 classroom. You could
address a letter, giving them these more recent projections, showing the
mid point of these figures is 1210 and asking they give that consideration.
A lot would depend on the way the letter was written, it should be a nice,
easy tone .
Paul said these figures are based on 7-12 , reimbursement for sq footage and
for dollars are a lot different for younger grades . The State , giving us
full reimbursement , is a bonus.
Paul asked if we would build a school for 1 , 180 or for 1 , 000? We could
build the core at 1 , 200 with classrooms for 1 , 000 and build the wing in the
future if we need it.
Dr . Collabro said you will get reimbursed for 1180 students, that will bring
5
