Peter said both the architect and project manager have said the entire
building can be open by September 1996 .
Paul said looking at it like that (phasing students in) , it is not in our
best interest economically to open this in Sept 1996 . You can ' t build a
$28 million school and then give the students the option to go to another
school we have to pay (Falmouth) .
Steve said we can ask the architect to develop a spread sheet so we can
evaluate if it make sense to phase.
The Committee said Dr. Calabro said you cannot phase the project, it is one
submission. You cannot get multiple timelines from the State.
Steve disagrees with the that comment, other communities have done it.
The Committee agreed we should build a core facility for 1180 . The school
Committee will have to make the decision about phasing in the students when
we can give them a better idea if the school will be open in September
1996 .
POOL
Steve Greelish suggested the pool and anything beyond the basic
reimbursement should be presented to the town in some form of referendum.
Merry Sue noted it does not have to be above the basic reimbursement. That
is why came back from the State. Bill Martiros agreed - at the meeting he
attended , he heard if you can build within the 183 , 000 sq feet, they will
reimburse for the pool .
Bill Martiros said Gus Fredericks said he was going to get figures and
contact other schools , to see if they would be interested in using this
pool .
Paul said he spoke with two principals, one with a pool and one without.
Both said they absolutely wanted the pool , one wouldn ' t give it up and the
other would give anything for it. As a community center, we owe it to the
rest of this town to get their opinion .
The Town will have to be shown the capital costs as well as operational
costs, and ask how they feel about it.
Janice said we need to provide after school activities, we have to provide
something for the kids to do.
Gus was not present for this discussion but the Committee would like to
discuss this further with him.
SUPERINTENDENT 'S SPACE
Janice told the Committee at last night' s public hearing , Dr. Calabro said
we will have to put in Superintendent's space, somewhere in town . The tone
has changed because there is no reimbursement.
Peter asked about putting Dr . DeMoura and the high school on the same site ,
in different buildings . That idea has been brought to him.
Paul said you cannot do that within the $27 million .
(Joe Polito joined the meeting at 8: 30 p.m. and Gus Fredricks returned)
Steve said a 3 , 000 sq foot building at $165 per sq foot is half a million
dollars.
The Committee agreed this is a question to bring to the architect - the
most cost effective space for the superintendent (special ed director,
staff , etc. ) .
5
