Paul explained with the pitch on the outside of the academic wing it makes
the building look taller .
Norris said the wood proportions will bring it down .
Are these changes net improvements or for cost? Ed said they are
intertwined . They found they could achieve as handsome of a building with
a flat roof and to reep the benefit of the pitched roof , they had to go
beyond where they were before .
Steve has a strong concern about flat roofs .
Paul said it is difficult to get an understanding with a 1 tone model . He
is concerned the roof issue has not gone away . He doesn ' t think they have
a "warm style" building yet .
Merry Sue asked them to talk about the wood . Where will it be?
Peter asked if they would put wood on this building if cost was not an
issue , just for it; s aesthetics qualities?
Ed said if their choice was single color brick wall vs . wood they would
choose wood but if they had the leeway to do brick with setbacks , coursing ,
so it was not a flat wall they would choose the brick , but they don ' t have
that leeway . Wood and masonry appeal to Cape Cod and relate to cost .
Norris presented a sketch of their suggested exterior for the academic
wing : masonry base with a color choice for the block of various shades of
grey and the higher elevation is wood siding , cedar with a grey wash .
Around the window is a smooth finish treated wood panel .
The block should be a combination of both the rough and smooth surface
block.
( Peter Dinizio left the meeting -6 : 30 p .m. )
Ed said the combination of the 2 surfaces around the window will develop a
pattern for the air handlers to fit in . They can use the animation to
break down the scale.
Paul asked them to explore using a less expensive material in the back area
of the building .
Janice asked why they want to make a school look like a house? They
worked hard to sell the Committee on the sloped roof and now they are not
there . The Committee has always said they are not interested in wood .
Everyone deals with the problem of wood with their homes , it is an
incredible amount of up keep .
Ed said they will come back to the Committee with either more provocative
illustrations or other models to convince the Committee that is the way to
go or study other options for warmer materials, including the roof .
Paul said the Committee knows there would be a premium to pay to get the
exterior of the building to look the way they want it. We want something
that won ' t give the town any problems .
Steve Greelish likes the wood .
Paul suggested they bring pictures of some of their other buildings ,
especially roofs and exterior to get a better view point.
7
