fits in with the community .
They don ' t envision: a "totally" sloped roof for this project.
Dr . DeMoura said the pitch is so little that it is basically a
flat roof . He knows money is a problem but he sees maintenance as
a nightmare . Most of the building is flat roofs.
Paul said there is a consensus that the sections that are pitched
are acceptable . There is a divided Committee on the flat areas .
There are still major concerns about flat roofs.
Ray said to keep on schedule they have to keep moving forward and
have to keep drawing . With approval of this scheme , they can
keep going forward and will come back to the Committee with
details of the roofs to prove to the Committee they will work .
If they have to re-study the architecture it holds up moving
forward .
Paul said the schedule doesn ' t mean anything if the Committee is
not happy with the scheme . Are there any other alternatives? Can
we find another way to deal with it?
Ed said it is their obligation to convince the Committee that
they have a roof, roof edges and runoff management system to
satisfy the Committee ' s needs .
Janice would like to see a shed roof , she does not :cant the water
runoff depending on a pipe in the middle of the roof .
Peter asked if the flat roof was for cost or for aesthetics?
Ray said both . He agrees that he does not want to move forward
unless the Committee is happy with the scheme .
Peter polled the Committee :
Paul - flat roofs are potentially a problem. Architecturally he
likes it but is concerned about long term maintenance of the flat
areas .
Michael : has no problem with it .
Joe : does not like the roofs , because they are not pitched .
Merry Sue likes it.
Janice agrees with Paul . Flat roofs worry her . There is rarely a
School Committee meeting where they don ' t have to talk about roof
problems.
Bill is concerned about the flat roof. He would like to see the
cafeteria area in more detail .
Joan said personally she has had back luck with flat roofs . More
pitch would make her more comfortable .
Bill Hauck suggested they come up with a mid-way pitch of 1 /2"
instead of 1 /3" . He likes interior drains because they won' t
freeze up and won ' t run off on the face of the building .
Peter said Nantucket had a flat roof and asked how it is working?
Ed said it was finished a year ago; they have had no complaints .
Peter said it seems the Committee ' s concerns are not aesthetics
but function .
5
