Paul will meet with SMMA when they are ready . He suggests using magnetic
holders on the doors, they won ' t open unless a fire alarm goes off. A
flexible system should be put in and the school administration can do what
they want with it.
Steve suggested designing as manual a system as possible, so it is always
operable.
10. Telephone system: has to be added to the contract. Who will write the
specs is another question. SMMA is not doing the specs. Bob said the
School Dept. usually makes that decision.
Michael Pare said it has to be set up properly.
The Committee will have to decide who will do the phone system specs.
Peter read from a letter sent to him from John Childs outlining the
services he will provide. He does not get into much design of the system
in this phase.
Michael said it is the same lousy scope of work from the beginning.
$10, 000 is a lot of money for that amount of work.
Paul explained SMMA's original submission used BB&K as technology
consultant but it was then shifted to Childs. Childs scope of works seems
much different from BB &K's - they were more technical . Because of the
shift, some issues may have fallen through the cracks and a solution will
have to be developed.
Steve said a consultant is needed to write the specs.
Michael said he wrote a document outlining what was expected from the
technology consultant.
Paul said that document falls short because is does not address the
educational consulting that the School Department needs. Michael says
Childs is overpriced but these are the architect' s consultant choices. It
is clear from his conversations with Dr. DeMoura that his overall view for
using computers is image, not substance - he said himself he needs
assistance.
Peter said the Committee has to go with Childs for this phase, he is on
board but he may not be capable of Step 2 work.
Michael said he has, in writing, asked Childs for references and resumes of
his staff and has not received them. He has done some investigation and
heard that Childs has limited experience, limited capabilities, has a habit
of causing financial overruns, doesn't listen to the people in the school ,
has a cookie cutter approach. He has only been in business for 5 years.
He did not hear too many good things.
He agrees Childs must stay on but the Committee should get more out of this
first stage.
Paul will work on ironing this out with SMMA.
11 . Computer system cabling and termination added to the contract: yes put
them in. There is not a consultant presently available to provide any
information.
Steve does not want this to stunt the job.
12. Millwork in science and computer labs - same as number 4. Bob will
continue to work on it.
19. Auditorium Sound System - Michael said in his opinion it is totally
unacceptable. It doesn 't have the frequency response to give the quality
needed. It is not capable of dolby or surround sound. This spec came from
4
