Mr. Whale said that can also be accomplished on the monitor in the
classroom. It is a good source of communication between administration and
staff. It is often abused and there will have to be strictly enforced
rules.
Bill asked if the TV cable in the rooms are in a conduit going from outlet
to outlet?
Mr. Whale said yet and no. He drew a sketch of their proposal . When in the
wall , it will be in a conduit, when overhead, in the ceiling , not conduit.
Bill asked how long TV cable lasts?
Mr. Whale suggested asking the cable company. At least 30 years. Steve
suggested it has a 1000 year life.
Mr. Whale said fiber will be used only between the data closet and the
media center, the remainder will be copper.
He has built 200 buildings with this design and it has worked well . Why not
take fiber to the desk top? Cost.
Bill asked if his typical classroom design is the minimum?
He said no, minimum would be a data drop only at the computer station .
Library automation systems. There are some very good ones on the market,
there are 3 that Mr. Whale has a preference for. It will make the library
staff ' s life a lot easier. Each has many different programming options.
Science Room- there was a lot of discussion about where to place the TV at
yesterday's meeting. They decided high up was best, there wasn ' t any room
elsewhere. They suggest a top down camera for the lab station, so it can
be put on the TV and students can stay in their seats. It only costs about
$50. He needs feedback from the Committee.
Dr. DeMoura likes it, if the budget allows.
Merry Sue and Joe both like it.
Committee discussed library automation systems. Peter asked if the CLAMS
system, will be included in the school package? Dr. DeMoura said it has to
be determined if the school library will be accessible from outside the
school . He feels there should be some mechanism to allow access from the
outside.
The public library and school libraries use Winnebago for their automation
system.
Paul said he hopes there will be a partnership between the public library
and school library.
Joe said there is such a resource so close in the Oceanographic Institute,
he hope the school can take advantage of that.
Permission from WHOI is the question .
Media center - will have 6-8 racks. It is 275 sq feet and Mr . Whale
questions if the area is large enough to support all the technology you
want to bring in.
Merry Sue explained the school ' s video person wants his equipment at the TV
studio, not up in the media center.
He said they can move the equipment down but there will be 6 racks and over
1000 tiles of tapes. Maintenance is a big issue.
4
I
