needs time for review.
Joel said the last set they distributed were design development. When the
contract documents drawings are at the 80% level , they will distribute them
for review. Those are scheduled for completion on January 25th . There is
about 1 month between 80% and 100% complete.
DISCUSSION WITH TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT -CHILDS CONSULTING
Mr. Jeff Whale was present representing Childs Consulting .
Joel explained there was a meeting yesterday with Michael Kirwin of CCR,
Manny Tavares, SMMA' s electrical department, Phil Poinelli and himself. It
was a very beneficial meeting, a lot of information was developed. CCR is
on their way to developing the wiring and infrastructure.
Mr. Whale, Vice President of Childs Consulting, has worked for Childs
Consulting for 10 years in the educational planning and engineering
departments. Today he would like to talk about specific products and how
they apply to education.
He presented a sketch of a typical classroom and reviewed were all the data
drops will be. He said the classrooms are designed to be flexible and have
the flexibility to expand.
Teachers cabinet, with computer, will have A/C outlet and jacks inside. All
outlets will. go back to that cabinet. You can physically bolt the computer
onto the shelf for about $50. He recommends looking into that.
They recommend fiber optic backbone.
TV will be wall mounted .
They recommend providing the ability to transfer the computer screen image
to the TV so the entire class can view it.
Video camera - can be brought into the classroom plugged into a jack and
have a live message throughout the building.
A camera in the principals office will bring live messages through the
school .
There will be two channels to broadcast video.
The internet is a powerful tool . It is presently being studied whether
distance learning can be applied through the internet.
The School Department/Committee must prioritize the systems in order of
importance.
Peter asked about monitors in the hallways and cafeteria.
Mr. Whale said students shouldn 't be in the hallways, if the monitors are
displaying time then it is a very expensive clock . They are planned to be
in the cafeteria. In the lobby there are 4 monitors in the front lobby.
Peter explained there will only be 3 classes in the building when it opens
and it will take 4 years to fill the school . Do we buy PC ' s as we grow?
Mr. Whale said yes, and TVs. All classroom will be wired for
infrastructure and you should put a plan together for areas that will be
occupied initially. You don 't want PCs or TVs sitting there , unused, using
up their warranty periods.
Peter asked what type of fiber optic cable is planned to be used?
Mr. Whale said they plan to use flexible cable. Video is not using fiber.
Paul explained he visited the school in Rockford MI which has TV monitors
in the corridors broadcasting messages to students, schedule changes, etc.
3
