Bill feels they can bypass the gym equipment, they don ' t really need it and
money could be put to better uses . It can be purchased at a later date. He
also feels they can cut way back on the computers in all the rooms . Buy
them later and put the money somewhere we can use it.
Paul said they will be staging the purchasing of the computers . You get a
better value on the furniture if you purchase it all up front.
Dr. DeMoura explained there is not longer a need for a language lab because
you can purchase portable units ; any room can be a language lab.
Paul asked where the money for long distance learning is? It should be in
Childs ' budget.
Mr. Sean O' Connor was present and asked the Committee if they had someone
giving them an assessment on the way to do the technology? This seems to be
the most expensive way to lay it out. You are going to run into a
nightmare.
Paul asked in what sense?
Mr.O'Connor said they will need someone to coordinate their software , the
Committee should hire someone to do an assessment, you don ' t need a PC for
each student. You ' re going to have compatibility problems .
Phil explained the technology consulting was divided into 3 pieces :
1 . Childs - Programming of technology .
2 . CCR - infrastructure of the program that Childs developed .
3 . Consultant which will set up the software.
CCR has worked closely with SMMA and Childs so infrastructure is in sync
with the design program.
Peter explained to Mr.O'Connor that the Committee started by hiring a
consultant who worked closely with Dr . DeMoura and came up with a basic
program for the technology . The next consultant is now developing the
system to deliver that program. The third step will be to purchase the
equipment. There is a program.
Mr. O'Connor said he would -like more information . He was curious about
which approach they were taking .
Merry Sue said after the principal is hired, the consultant will look at
the current existing software and put together a package suitable to our
needs . That is a job of the principal and school department, not the
Committee.
Steve said there is a generic network system that allows us to use
anything . Mr . O'Connor said everyone is moving to PC' s .
Steve said we will have PC' s . You can plug anything into this network. It
is a hierarchial system with multiple servers , multiple hubs .
Mr. O'Connor asked if they plan to hire someone to maintain the network?
Yes .
Paul told Manny Tavares the Committee may want a further breakdown of his
budget.
He said he will provide that and it will be followed by recommendations of
what products to specify .
Joe asked if the budget can be brought back to reality?
Mr. Tavares said 5 years from now you will spend this amount plus or minus
7
