Janice thinks the Committee should ask the Selectmen for guidance.
Steve said the question is can we build and equip the building for the
money we have? FF&E is probably more than what will be required . He
cannot yet determine any cuts to be made from this information .
Peter said we are where we are . Re-design will not save money . This is an
opportunity to build it right, or not build it right. There are things the
Committee misjudged and some things beyond their control . Why not let the
people of the town make a choice about what they want.
Merry Sue said she is leaning towards Peter's idea.
Paul reviewed the figures and determined that by chopping off 6 ,OOOsq feet
li of the building (auxiliary gym) it will cost the town $500 , 000 more . They
cut $500, 000 out of the building budget but it cost the town $500 ,000 .
Mike Pietrowski said he spoke with Rep. Teague who said the Megaplex
project will have an influence on whether there is an increase in State
funding . GESS is now $12 million in the hole .
Phil said GESS represents 179 towns across the State, not just the Boston
area as does the megaplex . More legislators are effected by the school
issue, not the megaplex .
Peter does not think there is any fat in this project, the Committee made
their best effort. He does not want to be rigid because of a decision made
18 months ago.
Paul said he does not feel it is right not to give the majority of
taxpayers the chance to decide for themselves. The Committee has cut
things the community will have to pay for later, at 100% . The Committee is
not doing justice to the town to not provide them a 58% discount.
Merry Sue asked what the next step would be? Vote on it and bring it to
the Selectmen .
Paul said it should go back to the Selectmen.
Phil said other communities put the article on the warrant but leave the
number blank and insert it when they have the best information . On April
16th you will know exactly where you are ( bids are in) .
Peter said they will need to know the number 2 weeks in advance of the
election .
Janice does not see anything wrong in exploring this with the Selectmen and
the Committee should bring the facts , about going backwards instead of
forwards when you cut square feet off the building.
Peter suggested there could be a special town meeting , just for the high
school , 2 weeks after the May 1 town meeting .
The Committee asked Dr. DeMoura' s opinion .
He said it is the Town ' s decision . He does think it is premature until the
bids are in .
5
