respiratory problems (US average is 3%) and Cape Cod because of the
location to water.
Merry Sue asked after the building is occupied, how often should we re-
test?
Mr Hamilton said to wait 3 months , until the winter season. Get the
immediate problems under control then wait until December.
Janice said this Committee and the School Committee should not make a
decision until Occuhealth has met with the town authorities . It is a
positive report but we need to use our experts on this issue .
** Paul made a motion to authorize Joel Seeley to notify Occuhealth to
re-test the high school asap. Janice seconded the motion.
All members were in favor 6-0**
Joel said if the opinion is the students could occupy the building during
concurrent testing and then elevated levels are found after students are in
the building , those rooms will be vacated, cleaned and re tested. If the
levels are then low, the rooms could be re-occupied?
Paul said it is Occuhealth' s opinion that the rooms don' t have to be
vacated.
Mr. Hamilton said they will make a determination for any area found to be
elevated whether the room should be vacated, based on species .
Steve asked if a room is found to have high counts next week, will it be
cleaned and re-tested again? Yes.
The Committee asked Dr. DeMoura and John Williams how they felt?
John Williams said his concern is what if 20 rooms come back high next week
and they have to be evacuated, after the students are in the building?
Paul asked Mr. Hamilton if he would expect to see any levels like that?
Mr. Hamilton said there is a very remote possibility. What he saw in A was
very positive as well as second floor of B.
Joel said however, in the first floor of E, where the majority of mold was ,
only 1 test was done there.
The remedial work as been completed there now, however.
Steve asked if they inspected the duct work?
Mark, from Occuhealth said there was some construction dust in the air
handler. The HVAC system was cleaned , the filters changed and it looked
good. He saw some grit on the bottom of the pan and that was normal . In
area E some exposed duct had some tacky discoloration which looked to be
from oil . The majority of duck work he saw was very clean. He recommended
they clean the interior area of the duct on the second floor, where the
tacky areas was .
Paul said the Committee will have to hear what town counsel has to say
about this . He has serious concerns if we don' t open the school , due to our
choice , and the chance for liquidated damages .
The school department has the right to make that decision not to open the
school .
8
