e.
Paul asked John Williams to think about whether he would like to see more
money spent in that are . Will they gain more productivity form the teachers
if they have lap tops?
FURNITURE
Paul said the overall consensus is the music budget is still extremely
high. Janice said some cuts were made but this has to go back to the music
department . John suggested having the music teachers come to a meeting .
This list is based on their visits to 3 other schools with music programs .
The majority of costs is marching band equipment .
Paul would like to hear what the School Department policy is . Will the
school provide only marching band equipment , or instruments for classroom
instruction? Then they should breakdown this list under each
policy/program.
This can become a hardship for the school department , to maintain this
level of equipment.
Janice said the next School committee meeting is November 4th and they will
discuss it .
Before that meeting , John Williams and Dr. DeMoura should meet with the
music department .
Gray boards : Joel reviewed the program. It did say grey boards for video
and marker, chalk is not preferred. He called four manufacturers , 2 had
multipurpose boards, 2 had grey and white . Grey is used only if chalk will
also be used, otherwise white is used. There are two finishes , mat and
gloss. For projections and marker mat finish is recommended. Gloss boards
are better for long term marker use , they will clean better. You get
"ghosting" with a mat finish.
It was also in the program that each classroom should have a projection
screen. A rough estimate from Manny Tavares for screens is about $135 per
screen $10-12 , 000 dollars total . To replace all the boards with mat is
about $40 , 000 .
Janice does not think the project should bear any additional cost because
we clearly specified what we wanted .
Paul suggested discussing the technical aspects first .
Merry Sue said they wanted multipurpose board to use overheads as a
teaching tool and teachers would not be writing on the boards as much.
John Williams said many teachers use the boards a lot ( for writing ) and in
5-6 years they may look horrible .
He suggested surveying the teachers .
Paul agreed that with computer technology overheads will be used more.
Steve added we also bought some LCD projection panels.
Peter asked if the present boards are completely unsuitable for receiving
overheads?
Merry Sue said you get a big glare spot in the middle .
Paul suggested talking to the manufacturer about where they have installed
multi use boards and talk to those schools, how they look and work.
He asked Joel to bring in literature and make a recommendation about
screens .
5
