STUDENT SERVICES
Title I
Title I services are offered to grade K-2 students who have a substantial reading deficit. This service
provides remediation and reinforcement of basic skills.
Guidance Department
Counselors are trained to support students, staff, and parents/guardians for educational, social and
emotional needs of our students.
The procedure for scheduling an appointment is as follows:
• Parents/guardians may make an appointment by calling the school at 508-539-1520 x 5117.
• A student may make an appointment by obtaining a pass from the homeroom
teacher.
• In emergency situations, a student may report directly to the guidance office.
• When a counselor wishes to see a student, the homeroom teacher will be notified.
Some of the services of the guidance office are:
• helping students with personal, familial, educational and social needs
• counseling regarding academic achievement, decision making, problem solving
and life skills
• reviewing and interpreting school records
• lending reading materials
• facilitating small student support groups
• working with administration, staff, children, parents/guardians and public/private agencies.
Special Education Services
The district has the overarching philosophy of inclusion and programs that support special
education of students along a continuum of service delivery options according to student needs.
These support programs include language-based learning centers, behavior support centers,
autism spectrum resources and related services. The district also offers a range of support
services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech/language services for those
who qualify.
Transitions
The Coombs School staff carefully helps children transition into school and from grade level to
grade level. The staff assist parents in acclimating children to the preschool setting.
Preschoolers at Coombs and in the community are exposed through a Kindergarten Countdown
Program for parents/guardians and children which provides multiple opportunities of school
experiences prior to entering kindergarten. Individual children requiring more programmed
transitions per IEPs will be exposed to the kindergarten setting, kindergarten staff, and
kindergarten classroom procedures before ending their preschool year. Thus, they will be
familiar with kindergarten before officially attending a K program.
50
