" The intent of the mandate is to promote site-based <br /> planning that responds to the unique circumstances at each school. <br /> 45. If a school district has several small schools under the leadership <br /> of the same principal, must he/she be the chair of each school's <br /> council? <br /> Yes. However, because the law provides for co-chairs of councils, <br /> principals of multiple schools may share and rotate the <br /> responsibility for chairing the councils with their co-chair. <br /> 46. Since secondary schools have diverse disciplines and faculties, how <br /> can the election process of teachers at the secondary schools <br /> ensure that this diversity is represented on the council? <br /> The faculty at secondary schools may consist of academic area <br /> teachers, pupil services personnel, co-curricular and extra- <br /> curricular staff, and vocational teachers in a comprehensive high <br /> school. while it may not be practical to have every area <br /> represented, secondary schools can use a variety of .ways to obtain <br /> diverse representation on the council. <br /> Two examples: <br /> c Request the academic teachers, the vocational teachers, the <br /> co-and extra-curricular teachers, and the pupil services staff <br /> each to meet separately as nominating caucuses to select one <br /> of their- peers as a candidate for the school council . <br /> o Stipulate that there can be only one teacher on the council <br /> from any one academic department. <br /> 20 <br />
