STUDENT PLACEMENT
We believe that the Mashpee Public Schools should be providing every child with the best possible
leaming environment. There are many variables to consider in the placement process from year to
year. It is important to us that every child is successful. Thus, placement must be done by the
professional staff. Be assured that each child's specific needs will certainly be considered.
BIRTHDAY PARTIES AND PLAYDATES
Staff are not permitted to distribute phone numbers or addresses of students. There will be no
personal distributions to individuals in the classroom by staff, students or parents/guardians. The
school is not permitted to distribute personal invitations to children for birthday parties, play dates,
etc. Also, if a birthday party or such is postponed, the school is not responsible for contacting
parties involved. Personal business of this nature cannot be conducted during school hours.
GOODIES FOR CELEBRATIONS
All deliveries to the classrooms will be made by office personnel only. Goodies coming into
school must be store bought and labeled with ingredients. Peanut-safe classrooms may operate
differently. Teachers will notify parents in particular classrooms at the beginning of each
school year of protocols in those rooms for everyone's safety. Please refer to Wellness Policy
at the back of this handbook.
SAFETY DRILLS
When the fire alarm sounds, we require every adult and student in the school to respond.
Students are to:
• stop all talking;
• follow teacher instructions and close all classroom windows and doors
while exiting;
• pass in single file and walk quickly and quietly to the designated exit;
• remain with their classroom teachers during the entire fire drill unless
otherwise instructed.
CODE RED DRILLS
Emergency drills to keep children safe indoors (requiring classroom lockdowns) will be
performed a minimum of twice yearly. The children will be instructed by the classroom teachers
of this procedure. It is similar to a fire drill - stop talking, go to a safe place in the classroom
designated by the teacher, follow teacher instruction, wait for signal to resume activity throughout
the classroom and building.
When a CODE RED is announced we require every adult and student in the school to
respond. All adults and students remain in the school building. All interior and exterior
doors are locked.
Teachers are to:
• Direct students to a designated area in the classroom.
• Close and lock the classroom door to the hallway.
• Close and lock the classroom door in any adjacent classroom, it it is vacant.
• Cover glass panel in classroom door to hallway.
• Close all windows.
• Turn off lights and classroom computers
• Supervise students.
• Avoid use of the school telephone system.
• Await announcement that CODE RED is over.
17
