• Sunglasses may not be worn in the building without a doctor's note, but may be worn en route to,
school, for recess and upon dismissal.
• Student dress, including total appearance, should be within reasonable limits.
The parent(s)/guardians(s) of a student in violation of the school dress code will be called to bring an
appropriate change of clothing to school. If no one is at home, the principal or the principal's
designee will find suitable clothing to wear.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips form an important part of the educational plans for the students at Mashpee Public Schools.
Such trips are planned with the utmost care and parent/guardian help is sought in assuring safety at all
times. Teachers insist upon good conduct and do everything they can to make the journey one of many
worthwhile learning experiences.
It is required that all school regulations will be adhered to on a trip and on the bus on any school-
sponsored activity.
Unfortunately, despite every precaution, accidents occur. In such an event, the teacher in charge and the
parents/guardians serving as chaperones can be depended upon to use good judgment about getting
immediate and proper care for the student. Chaperones are selected by the classroom teacher. To be a
chaperone, you must be registered at the beginning of each year through the volunteer office (508-539-
1550 x 175). Most often, the school cannot send many chaperones because theatres, etc. regulate the
ratio of adults to children in each group. The school must abide by these regulations.
Chaperones will be on public transportation with the children and not in personal vehicles.
Chaperones/parents/guardians may not follow a school bus on field trips and seek to remove a child
during or at the end of the trip to transport him/her in their own vehicle. Children must leave from
the school and return to the school building for/from the field trip.
Since field trips have become a common practice in the educational program of our community, it is
important that the parent/guardian understand their responsibility in case an accident occurs and
assume any financial responsibility. Neither town officials, the school administrators, teaching staff
nor parents/guardians/chaperones may be liable in case of injuries or unforeseen accidents.
When there is an opportunity for a field trip, parents/guardians must complete and sign a form and
return it to the teacher prior to the trip. If the form is not returned, the student will not be
allowed to participate in the field trip. NO PHONE PERMISSION is permitted.
Field trips extend student learning and experiences. It is hoped that all students will benefit from
these opportunities. However, while we believe all children should benefit from field trips, the
teacher and/or administrator reserve(s) the right to withhold a child from such a trip if he/she
exhibits any behavior that may present a safety issue to himself/herself or others.
WALKING FIELD TRIPS
During the school year the teachers may take the students to the Quashnet School, the Mashpee
Public Library, the Mashpee Commons, the Mashpee Senior Center, the Mashpee Boy's and Girl's
Club or other organizations within walking distance of the school. Please give permission for your
child to visit these areas under the supervision of teachers and chaperones by signing the Walking
Field Trip Permission Release form at the back of this handbook. Your child cannot participate in
these trips without your permission.
16
