BOARD OF APPEALS Minutes - May 24, 1989 Page 5.
An unidentified member of the audience said that the Pier 37 fire
had been started by residents setting off fireworks.
Ms. Perry stated that she was concerned by the prospect of a toxic
fire from fiberglass. Mr. Burtis responded that 85% of boats now have
automatic fire alarm systems.
Harold Cohen, a Mashpee taxpayer, said the boat yard is an asset
to the community.
Ms. Driscoll asked when the gas tanks had been checked. Mr. Burtis
replied that the Fire Chief had checked them two days ago.
Mr. Hanrahan discussed storage of gasoline in the boats. He said
if a permit was granted it would have a condition concerning storage
or chemicals or gas, as is done on any permit.
Bill Bridges, a commercial fisherman, said that the Town is
limiting moorings and people have no place to keep boats. He said
that realistically the rack system is the only way to handle boats.
Dan Oliver asked if the building was built according to the plans.
Mr. Boyd replied that the building is taller than the original plan
and is a combination of the two buildings originally planned.
John Read, 45 Riverside Road, said that there had been a meeting of
• the Seconsett Island Association and that the overall feeling was in
favor of this. He said a tape had been made which would indicate the
favorable opinions of the members.
Mr. Hanrahan asked if any officer of the Association was present.
Ms. Perry responded that she was an officer. She explained that
the press had been asked to leave the meeting. She considered it a
private meeting so that any tape would not be made public.
Mr. Hanrahan stated that he would like further details on the
parking. Mr. Halpern asked for a figure showing the percent of usage
and parking requirements for that percent.
Ms. Perry said if the zoning by-law requires one parking space per
boat she would like to see that. She suggested the building be removed.
Mr. Hanrahan replied that the Building Inspector had commented
that there might be some misunderstanding of the exact nature of the.
petition and the By-law. He asked Mr. Boyd to explain.
Mr. Boyd said originally there were 11 cottages and a building.
He said you can't make the boat yard go away. It has the right to be
there. Everything is pre-existing and non -conforming. He explained
that zoning by-laws allowed grandfathering to allow upgrading and
prevent slums.
•
